Vol. 18 — No. 13 DECEMBER 9, 1975 mmmmmm Cagers, Matmen McCorkel, Lieberman Pace Wrestlers In Early Meets Heavyweight Don McCorkel, of Hershey, Pa., highlighted early wrestling action for Lehigh with three falls as the Engineers won over Wilkes, 29-12, Northwestern, 24-10, and Florida, 22-14. The Wilkes victory came in the 1975-76 debut, before 2,900 fans in Grace Hall. Northwestern and Florida were beaten Sunday during a double dual at the Nassau, N. Y., Coliseum witnessed by some 3,000 spectators. Florida, the Southeastern Conference champion, came into the coliseum with 33 straight dual meet triumphs and outscored Montclair State in the first match of the day, 22-17, to extend this streak to 34. Lehigh, trailing after the first eight bouts, shattered the string as 190-pounder Mike Lieberman racked up a decision and McCorkel followed with his third pin in three tries, in 7:18 over 275- pounder Nils Stradskov after running up a 14-0 lead. Strandskov had been Florida's hero earlier in the day, getting a fall in the final bout against Montclair State to win that meet. He never had a chance against McCorkel, the EIWA 190-pound king, who registered two takedowns, an escape, two near-falls and a couple of penalty points before putting him away. It was a great afternoon for McCorkel. Two years ago, as a freshman, he had dropped two heavyweight verdicts in the coliseum as Lehigh lost photofinish decisions to Michigan State and Oregon State. McCorkel's bigger now, a solid 225, and much more experienced. Other Engineers sweeping their first three starts included 142-pounder Tihamer Toth-Fejel of Cupertino, Calif., 158-pounder Glenn Willard of Yardley, Pa., 167-pounder Nils Deacon of Howell, N. J., and Lieberman. Bob Sloand, 134-pounder from Landing, N. J., had a 2-1 mark. Lance Leonhardt, 126-pounder, went 1-1-1 and Armin Vaihinger, 150-pounder from Doylestown, Pa., was 1-2. Freshmen Steve Tupgeon (118) of E. Hartford, Conn., and Bill Amelio (177) of Pittsburgh, Pa., each lost three times. Three champions were absent from the Lehigh lineup. NCAA and EIWA king Mike Frick, of Hamburg, N. J., is academically ineligible, Pat Sculley is concentrating on his classroom work and Mark Lieberman, on a five- year academic program, is sitting out the season. Coach Thad Turner hopes Frick and Sculley will be able to rejoin the squad next month. The (Continued on Page 2) LEHIGH 29, WILKES 12 118—Mat Simone, W, dec.
