Vol. 16 — No. 20 FEBRUARY 19, 1974 BETHLEHEM, PA. State Rally Tops Lehigh Wrestlers Zambo Hot As Cagers Split Pair An iron-man performance by a starting team which played until the midway point of the second- half, without substitution, lifted Lehigh to a 61-55 victory over Bucknell as the Engineers scored their first Middle Atlantic Conference triumph of the waning basketball season. In a second loop contest last week the Engineers toppled before Gettysburg, 78-63, despite a brilliant 28-point barrage by Steve (Buddy) Zambo, a freshman from Woodbridge, N. J. Zambo also led the way against Bucknell with 22 markers. Zambo was one of four frosh starters against Bucknell along with junior playmaker Gene Brown of Philadelphia, subbing for injured Norm Liedtke. The other freshmen were Charley Brown of Morristown, N. J., Rich Price of Verona, N. J., and Doug Kistler of Allentown, Pa. The young Engineers got off to a fast start, rolled up a 15-point lead at 28-13 and were on top at BUDDY ZAMBO ... The Engineers could gain only two individual triumphs against LaSalle, Roth taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:23.4 and Jim Ritter, of Emmaus, Pa., capturing the 100 freestyle in 51 seconds. It was the ninth victory of the season for the defending Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Assn. champions whose record is marred only by an 18-18 draw with Navy. Lehigh (12-7) dominated the early portion of the action, piling up a 12-3 lead, but the Nittany Lions pulled even with a triumph at 190 and took the meet as Charley Getty defeated George Barkanic in the heavyweight finale, 8-4. J., was defeated for only the second time this season in 18 meets. State began its winning comeback at 150 with Mike Mousetis downing Jeff Duke of Lancaster, Pa., 11-4. Jerry Villecco came from behind to nip Greg Karabin 4-3 at 158, Dan Brenneman was a 3-2 victor over Barry Dixon of DuBois, Pa., at 167, Larry Suhey rallied to edge Don McCorkel of Hershey, Pa., 5- 4 at 190, and Getty climaxed the surge with his win over Barkanic. There were five bouts decided by a single point, in the bristling meet, and State captured four of them. Fritz took Frick down late in the first period of their matchup. Frick escaped in the second stanza, scored a takedown of his own but then yielded an escape early in the final period to make LEHIGH wrestling coach Thad Turner with co-captains Tom Sculley, left, and Terry DeStito, both of whom scored impressive victories in Saturday's 18-15 setback at the hands of Penn State. it 3-3 on the scoreboard. The defensive tactics drew a warning for stalling but no penalty point was forthcoming. Sloand, a former state champion at Wheatfields High School in Niagara Falls, N.
