Vol. 16 — No. 19 FEBRUARY 12, 1974 BETHLEHEM, PA. Matmen Await Penn State Invasion Cagers Bow In League; Liedtke Hurt Two more outstanding shooting performances by Steve Zambo, of Woodbridge, N. J., weren't enough last week to turn the basketball tide against Lafayette and Delaware in Middle Atlantic Conference games. The Leopards defeated Lehigh, 92-63, at Easton, and the Blue Hens followed with a 72-54 decision at Newark, Del. Zambo was the Engineers' high scorer against Lafayette with 19 points and against Delaware with 16. Charley Brown of Morristown, N. J., another freshman, had 10 against the Leopards and 15 against the Hens. Lehigh's junior varsity (8-2) was an 82-78 victor over Lafayette in its only appearance. Coach Tom Pugliese's varsity lost more than the decision at Lafayette when Norm Liedtke of Verona, J. J., the squad's only senior, went to the sideline for the balance of the campaign with a foot injury. Liedtke's ability and experience had been valuable as he was a starter along with four freshmen. Following a familiar pattern, Lehigh's youngsters pulled ahead (Continued on Page 2) Toronto Eleven Drafts Schlegel Toronto of the new World Football League, which made Lehigh quarterback Kim McQuilken its No. 2 draft choice, came back in a later round to select tight end Bill Schlegel of the Engineers. McQuilken and Schlegel, the latter of Troy, N.Y., made up the greatest pitching and catching combination in Engineer football history. WINGMAN Bo Berizzi of Lehigh lines up shot against Allentown Hawks in 9-2 victory at Ice Palace. Engineers also whipped Middle Atlantic League rivals Lafayette and Rutgers during big week on the ice. Skaters Victorious Over Three Rivah Randy Frey, of Chatham, N. J., scored six goals last week as Lehigh's hockey team downed Lafayette, 6-2, Rutgers, 5-2, and the Allentown Hawks, 9-2. He had his biggest game against the Hawks with a 3-goal hat track and two assists. He scored twice against Lafayette and had a goal and an assist against Rutgers. Coach Toot Cahoon's skaters (6-2-2) benefited from strong goal keeping by Pete Bechtel, of Lancaster, Pa., who was credited with 17 saves in the Lafayette win. Mike Dale, of Mamaroneck, N. Y., had a pair of goals against Lafayette and Paul Grady of Westport, Conn., tallied twice against the Hawks. The scoring: Rutgers 1 0 1—2 Lehigh 5 0 0—5 Rutgers goals: MacLellan, Maichrzak. Assists: Maichrzak, MacLellan, Martin, McCormick. Lehigh goals: Frey, Grady, Oilwa, Berizzi, Miner. Assists: Frey, Grady, Berizzi, Dale, Hansen, Rinaldi. Lehigh o 3 3—6 Lafayette 0 1 0—1 Lehigh goals: Frey, Dale 2, Cookingham, Rinaldi. Assists: Rinaldi 2, Frey, Hansen, Berizzi. Lafayette goal: Bryce. Assist: Malone. Rifle Team Shutouts Over Army, 34-0, And Bucknell, 39-0, Bolster Hopes; Sculley Pins Campo Back-to-back blankings of Bucknell, 39-0, and Army, 34-0, last week bolstered Lehigh's hopes of upsetting Penn State in their showdown dual Saturday (Feb. 16) at Grace Hall. The Engineers will take a 12-6 record against the Nittany Lions who are 8-0-1 after battling Navy to an 18-18 draw last weekend. Navy, 10-1-1, defeated Lehigh recently at Annapolis, 20-12. In registering the first shutout in 30 duals constituting the Lehigh—Army revalry, the Engineers appeared to be reaching peak form just in time for late-season action including eastern and national tournaments. Penn State battled Army one week earlier and needed victories in the final three bouts to pull out a 24-15 decision. Lehigh could have forfeited the final three matches and still won by a comfortable margin over the Cadets before 2,745 spectators in Grace Hall last Saturday afternoon. Army lightweights, who gave Penn State difficulty, were wiped out by the Engineers who piled up a 19-0 advantage over the first five bouts. The crusher was undefeated Tom Sculley's 7:42 fall over Army star Mike Campo at 142. Campo, a senior, went into action with a 10-1-1 record and held a 3-2 lead late in the bout when Sculley, now 14-0-1, turned him over and flattened him with a chancery and inside crotch. This was the only six-pointer of the meet. Mike Frick of Hamburg, N.J., had a superior decision, 12-2, at 126 over Tom Howard. Earlier in the week he pinned Bucknell freshman Dave Smith in just 52 seconds. Frick has a 15-1-1 record Terry DeStito (14-1-2) of Enola, Pa., was given a rest against Bucknell. He came back to whitewash Cal Daley of Army, 5- 0. Tom Sculley also sat out the Bucknell engagement. In addition to Frick, double (Continued on Page 2) LEHIGH 39, BUCKNELL0 118 — Bob Sloand dec.
