CHARLEY BROWN Charley Brown Top Man Freshman center Charley Brown, of Morristown, N. J., leads Lehigh University's basketball scorers with 130 points in nine contests and a 14.4 average. He's also tops in rebounding with 65 and a 7.3 average. Freshman forward Rich Price, of Verona, N. J., is second in scoring with 91 points and in rebounding with 52 off the boards. Price and senior guard Norm Liedtke, also of Verona, are starters on the Engineer quintet. Liedtke, the squad's only senior, is averaging 4.7 points a game. Junior forward Hal Lambert of New Brunswick, N. J., team captain, is tied for third in scoring with freshman guard Dick Packer of Bethlehem, Pa., each with 47 points. TOM SCULLEY Sculley, Frick Only Early Winners; DeStito, Barkanic Capture Last Two Bouts Cal Poly's national college division wrestling champions won five of the first seven bouts Jan. 5 to edge Lehigh, 17-14, at San Luis Obispo, Calif., on the Engineers' first visit to the west coast. Lehigh (3-3) has additional dates on this trip at Arizona (Jan. 7), Southern Illinois (Jan. 9), Iowa (Jan. 11) and Iowa State (Jan. 12). The Engineers return to Grace Hall Jan. 18-19 for a quadrangular test against Oregon State, Pittsburgh and Indiana State of Terre Haute. Unbeaten EIWA champs Mike Frick and Tom Sculley were Lehigh's only winners early in the meet at Cal Poly as the hosts built up a 15-6 advantage which was enough to withstand an Engineer counter-attack in the heavier weights. Frick, 126, won 9-4 over Leon Ianavelli and Sculley, 142, was a 7-0 victor over Dave Giggy. Terry DeStito, 190, gained a 4-1 decision over Keith Leland and heavyweight George Barkanic made a successful seasonal debut at the expense of Randy Hudson, 10-3. Glenn Grant, 177, battled to a 1-1 stalemate with Sythell Thompson. Bob Sloand (118), Tihamer Toth-Fejel (134), Jeff Duke (150), Kim Hagedorn (158) and Greg Karabin (167 were defeated. Toth-Fejel came the closest to victory, dropping a 2-1 bout against Mike Wassum. The final three Cal Poly grapplers moved cautiously and never allowed the Engineers anything close to a fall as nearly all points came on takedowns, escapes and riding time. The decisions by Roger Warner (150 pounds), Cliff Hatch (158) and Bruce Lynn (167) held up as (Continued on Page 2) MIKE FRICK CAL POLY 17, LEHIGH14 118—Guy Greene (CP) decisioned Bob Sloand 9-6. 126—Mike Frick (L) decisioned Leon lanarelli 9-4. 134—Mike Wassum (CP) decisioned Tiahammer Toth-Fejel 2-1. 142—Tom Sculley (L) decisioned Dave Giggy 70. 150—Roger Warner (CP) decisioned Jeff Duke 7-3. 158—Cliff Hatch (CP) decisioned Kim Hagedorn 11-5. 167—Bruce Lynn (CP) decisioned Greg Karabin 17-8. 177—Glenn Grant (L) drew with Sythell Thompson 1-1. 190—Terry DeStito (L) decisioned Keith Leland 4-1. Football Writers reception in New York City. The Eastern College Athletic Conference is meeting along with the writers at 5 p.m. in the N. Y. U. Club, 123 West 43rd St., to make its annual gridiron awards. McQuilken, a college division Ail-American and the leading passer in the nation during the 1973 season, is to be honored as the Most Outstanding Player in Div. 2 of the ECAC. Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti, of Penn State, and quarterback Ed Powers of C. W. Post will receive similar trophies for excellence in Div. 1 and Div. 3, respectively. Honors are to be conferred during a cocktail reception 5-7 p.m. The Lehigh Alumni Club of New York is coordinating alumni attendance at the fete and a reservation may be made by mailing a $10 check, payable to the Lehigh Club of New York, to Martin H. Pearl, 84 William St., N. Y. C, 10038, or by phoning him at 1-212-425-8440, before Jan. 14. Lehigh alumni had a strong turnout at the Lambert Cup presentation last month and efforts are being made to equal or surpass that showing. Alumni see the size of the turnout as an indication to N. Y. football writers that Lehigh has a sizeable rooting section in the metropolitan area. Dr. Deming Lewis, Lehigh president, director of athletics Bill Leckonby, head football coach Fred Dunlap, and McQuilken have been invited to be honored guests of the ECAC at the affair. Anyone unable to contact Marty Pearl may make reservations through Jimmy McDowell, of the National Football Foun- (Continued on Page 2)
