Mermen Dump Rutgers, Delaware; Cagers 1-2; Wrestlers Defeated 'Berg First Victim 73-63 Steve (Buddy) Zambo, one of the nine freshmen on Lehigh's 14- man varsity basketball squad, turned in 43 points in three games last week as the Engineers defeated Muhlenberg, 73-63, and dropped hard-fought decisions to Rider, 62-57, and Gettysburg, 81- 70. Lehigh's junior varsity squad, which numbers eight frosh among 13 players, swept past the Cardinals of the Bethlehem City "A" League, 98-58, Rider, 61-57, and Gettysburg, 67-59. The JVs have won seven times in nine starts. Zambo, of Woodbridge, N.J., pumped in 20 points as Lehigh made Muhlenberg its first varsity victim of the campaign. He added 16 against Rider and 17 against Gettysburg, a pair of Middle Atlantic Conference rivals. Coach Tom Pugliese's youngsters led 'Berg at halftime, 34-30, but fell behind during the second half before once again surging into the lead and staying there. Zambo came off the bench in the first half to net 10 points, and contributed 10 more after the intermission. Pugliese had counted heavily upon the former N.J. all-stater from Woodbridge High but a bad thigh bruise inactivated him for most of the early games. He's just starting to hit his stride. Lehigh won both relay events to outpoint Rutgers despite three individual wins by Scarlet Knight Mark Carawan. Ritter won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and anchored the freestyle relay. Junior Jim Brobson of Collegeville, Pa., won the 3-meter diving event. Teammate Joel Manfredo of Bethlehem placed second in the one and three meter dives. Jon Kilroy won the 600, Stellan Thoren took the 1,000 and Elliot Michael was first in the mile. Mickey Yardis and Michael tied for top spot in the two-mile test. Time: 3:35.6. fans their biggest thrill of the season at 142 pounds as he upset NCAA champion Dan Muthler, 9- 6, handing the Middie star his first loss in 13 dual tests. Mike Frick was an easy winner at 126 over Tom Bauer, 10-0, and Terry DeStito dumped previously-undefeated Ken Goodrow in their. 177-pound scrap, 6-2. Greg Karabin gave the Engineers two points with a 2-2 draw against Rick Emerson at 158. Navy won the other six bouts. Jim McConnell rallied to top Bob Sloand 11-6 at 118, veteran Fred Hahndorf handled freshman Pat Sculley 10-4 at 134, John Althans came from behind for a 15-11 edge over Dave Homiak at 150, EIWA champ Bob Hartman outlasted Barry Dixon 11-10 at 167, unbeaten John Christensen won 8-3 over Glenn Grant at 190 and Jeff Simons was an 11-3 victor over George Barkanic at heavyweight. Tom Sculley's triumph over Muthler was a stunner as the Lehigh co-captain rolled up an incredible 9-0 lead in the first two periods. Muthler got it going in the third with a reversal, a near- fall and time, but Sculley's big early advantage stood up. Tom took Muthler down in the first period and added a two-point near fall. In the second he reversed and gained a three-point near fall for his 9-0 cushion, wrestling one of the finest bouts turned in by a Lehigh star in many years. Frick mauled Bauer, racking up a pair of three-point near falls, but couldn't flatten the midshipman. J., registered "hat tricks" as Lehigh's hockey team whipped Shippensburg at Hershey, 11-2. Doug Hansen of North Haven, Conn., rang up a pair of goals and three assists. Randy Frey of Chatham, N.J., had a goal and four assists. Jim Cookingham of Tarrytown, N.Y., had a goal and an assist and Marc Rinaldi of Cranford, N.J., registered five assists. The Engineers, coached by former Springfield Blades winger Toot Cahoon, couldn't keep up their momentum against Ithaca College, dropping a 7-2 decision on the winners' ice. Mike Dale of Mamaroneck, N. Y., and Bob Oliwa of Elizabeth, N.J., scored for the Engineers (3- 2-2).
