Bill Leckonby, director of athletics at Lehigh, made the announcement. Martin succeeds Bob Kennedy who was promoted to assistant varsity mentor with the Engineers. He assisted Kennedy with the last two Lehigh frosh squads. The new Engineer freshman coach, a Bethlehem business man, will serve on a part-time basis. Baseballers 3-1 In MAC Strong pitching, expected to be a trademark of Lehigh's 1971 baseball squad, carried the Engineers into the thick of the Middle Atlantic Conference pennant race during the team's early games of the campaign. In opening MAC action the Engineers swept a doubleheader against Bucknell, 1-0 and 4-2, and followed with an even split against Delaware's defending conference and District 2champions, losing 3-2 and winning 2-1. There were losses in three non-conference attractions, 3-1 to Penn, 7-6 to Army and 12-4 to Penn State to five Coach Stan Schultz's young squad a record of three triumphs against four defeats. Junior hurler Joel Menzzopane picked up two of the league victories, throwing two and one- third scoreless relief innings- against Bucknell and firing a brilliant two-hitter while going the route against Delaware. The only run he allowed the Blue Hens was unearned. Sophomore John Von Thaden fashioned the shutout against Bucknell with a major * assist from left fielder Jack Paget whose diving, rolling catch of a low line drive ended the contest with the tieing run charging toward the plate in the last inning. It was the first complete game shutout for a Lehigh mounds man since Mike Reilly whitewashed Lafayette 3-0 in 1967. Steve Rohrbach and Scott Beeten collaborated on a shutout over Drexel in 1969. Martin New Frosh Coach Lorenzo Martin, former Moravian College basketball star, has been appointed freshman cage coach at Lehigh.
