Matmen Lose At Former Swarthmore Star To Coach Lacrosse Squad Stephen J. (Steve) Jacobs on, a highly-successful mentor at Fair Lawn, N.J., High School, has been named head coach of lacrosse at Lehigh. William B. Leckonby, director of athletics at the University, made the announcement. The appointment becomes effective i mmediately. Jacobson, 27, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and raised in Retain Crown Lehigh riflemen clinched their third straight East Penn Intercollegiate League championship Saturday with a victory over visiting Scranton, 1301 to 1159. The Engineers (16-1) completed their league play with a perfect 1 2-0 record. Flip Bodine paced Lehigh with a 266. George Czerw had 251 to top the Royals. The summary: LEHIGH Bodine 266; Loewer 261; Clevenstine 259; Clements 258; Harwood 257. SCRANTON Czerw 251; Domanico 239; Mohler 236; Paradise 223; O'Brien 210. West Pittston, Pa. He graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1961 and from Swarthmore College in 1965 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. He succeeds Jim Scible who resigned following the 1970 season to become head football coach at East Pennsboro High School, Enola, Pa. Rick Taylor, assistant under Scible, left Lehigh last month to join the Dartmouth College gridiron staff. At Fair Lawn High School, Jacobson assisted on the football staff while serving as head lacrosse coach. His stickmen won 71 games and lost only 16 over a five-year span. He was New Jersey and Middle Atlantic States "Lacrosse Coach of The Year" in 1970 and president of the-N.JV Lacrosse Coaches Assn. in 1967 and 1968. His teams won two state championships and five public school crowns and he developed 11 players who earned all-state first team laurels. He was co-captain of Swarthmore* s football/team in 1964 and co-captain of the Garnet's lacrosse squad in 1965, receiving All-American honorable mention in 1964 and 1965 with the stickers where he starred as a defense- man. He was all-Middle Atlantic Conference both of those years. Penn State Nittany Lightweights Upset Strategy; 3 Engineers Win STEVE JACOBSON Skaters Romp Three-goal hat trick performances by Pete DesMeules and Jim Smith led Lehigh's hockey squad to a 13-2 rout of Villanova on the Albeth Arena ice. The Engineers bombarded the Wildcat net with 55 shots. Jeff Frey picked up two goals and five assists for a seven-point performance. Penn State, battling Navy for top spot in eastern intercollegiate wrestling rankings, won six bouts Saturday to turn back upset- 'minded Lehigh, 26-9, before 7,700 spectators in Rec Hall on the winners' campus. State also finished on top in a preliminary engagement, 22-14 over Lehigh's junior varsity. Lehigh strategy in the main event called for superiority in the lower weights where Coach Thad Turner hoped to build up a substantial lead. The absence of 126-pounder Greg Surenian, with an arm injury, seriously handicapped this effort but the Engineers still envisioned some sort of working margin for the second part of the program. Only Randy Biggs, 118-pound leadoff man, was able to withstand an expectedly strong Penn State showing over the first five weights. Biggs decisioned Spencer Bauer, 7-4, but Norm Palovcsik of the Lions quickly short-circuited the strategy as he pinned captain Dave Icenhower in two minutes at 126. Icenhower had cut all the way from 142 for the bout. Undefeated, untied Dave Waters of the Engineers scored four points in the last period for a 4-4 draw with Dana Balum in their 134-pound bout, another pairing Lehigh counted on winning. When Barry Snyder fol lowed at 142 with an 8-7 upset of unbeaten Herb Campbell the Nittany Lions were off and running. Only Steve Shields of Lehigh emerged with an unblemished seasonal record. He wrestled at 177 and whipped DanNewhard, 8-4, for his eight victory in eight dual meets. Scott Christie gave the Engineers their third and final triumph at 190 as he edged Jim Crowther, 3-2. State's three defending eastern champions were victorious. Clyde Frantz (158) decisioned Rick Bacastow, 7-1.
