Published by the Lehigh University Alumni Association Vol. 15 — No. 11 NOVEMBER 21, 1972 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Lehigh Dumps Lafayette Engineer 11 Wins 108th Game, 14-6 Lehigh's defensive unit shared honors with ace quarterback Kim McQuilken Saturday as the Engineers battled to a 14-6 margin over Lafayette in the 108th game of football's most- played series before a capacity crowd of 15,000 at Easton. It was Lehigh's ninth triumph, along with a tie, against Lafayette in the last 13 meetings. The Leopards have won only three times since 1959. McQuilken, who played brilliantly with 22 completions in 31 passing attempts for 248 yards and a touchdown, was the dominant individual figure in the contest and received the Most Outstanding Player award as determined by press, radio and television representatives covering the duel. Lehigh's defense, however, deserves at least equal billing as a unit. There have been many times during this losing (5-6) season when the defenders took the rap—unfairly according to coach Fred Dunlap—for disappointing afternoons. Saturday they rose to the oc- cassion magnificently at a time when the offense sputtered under a handicap of penalties (10 for 114 yards), an interception in the end zone and a fumble lost deep in Lafayette territory. The penalties, in particular, cost the Engineers any real show of offensive consistency during STAR RECEIVER Bill Schlegel (87) of Lehigh grabs one of the seven passes he caught against Lafayette. This gave him 59 for the season and a new Engineer record. the first half when Dunlap's squad rolled over the Leopards with a 9-2 advantage in first downs and a 230-51 margin in yards yet could only gain a 7-0 BASKETBALL Tom Pugliese, new head basketball coach at Lehigh, will be honored Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Grace Hall prior to his team's seasonal home debut against LaSalle. Lafayette came out swinging after the intermission and put together a drive to the Lehigh 2 where defensive halfback Mike Bowers of Edgewood, Md., pounced upon a fumble. The Engineer offense got un- tracked halfway through this period to put another TD on the board, and lead 14-0, but that was to be the extent of Lehigh's scoring on a day most observers looked for at least 28 points. The most dramatic moments of the afternoon came late in the contest after Lafayette had sliced the Lehigh lead to 14-6. Lehigh's defenders fought off the Leopards deep in Lafayette territory, forcing a punt, but a mixup on the return led to a fumble which the fired -up WRESTLING Lehigh wrestlers are winding up pre-season practice for the start of their schedule Saturday, Dec. 2, at Lock Haven State. Wrestle-offs are being conducted this week at Taylor Gym as coach Thad Turner gets ready for his third season. Goal-Line Stand Saves LU Victory Leopards covered at midfield. Lafayette, with Frank Campbell, Doug Elgin, Tim Grip and Tony Giglio carrying the ball, drove to a first down on the 2 with about three minutes to play. Campbell, a 215-pound fullback, crashed to the 1 on first down. Grip, a 200-pound quarterback, sneaked almost to the goal line on second down. Har- diman ran an option pitchout off the left side on the third try, had momentary daylight and appeared ready to knife into the end zone when Bowers shot the gap and spilled him at the 1. On the crucial fourth down, as Lafayette struggled to gain a 14- 14 tie, Grip mishandled the center snap as linebacker Chuck Smith, of Westfield, N.J., crashed into him. The ball skidded back to the 7. Grip fell on it but the threat was finished. Lehigh battled its way out to the 14 where Joe Alleva of Suf- fern, N.Y., who did an excellent punting job all day, got off a pressure kick to midfield where the ball was fumbled and tackle Pete Ellis of Lewisburg, Pa., fell upon it for the Engineers. Three plays later, all time-consuming line smashes, the 108th game was history. The goal-line stand, which saved it, was topped this season only at Delaware when the Engineers turned back the Blue (Continued on Page 2) IC4A Title-Again-For Runners Placing five men in the Top 25, Lehigh's powerful cross country team chalked up its fourth straight IC4A college division championship Nov. 13 and earned a trip to Chicago for the 76th annual National Senior AAU meet Saturday, Nov. 25. Coach John Covert's harriers, who won boardwalk relay honors at Atlantic City, N.J., the Canisius Invitational at Buffalo and the Middle Atlantic Conference title at Philadelphia before the IC4A event, will leave Friday for the Chicago tournament. The Engineer squad will consist of Tim Steele and Jim Barnes of Denville, N.J., Wayne Rogers of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Mike Strockbine of Commack, N.Y., Rick Bourie of Springfield, Mass., Brian Faraci of Haver- straw, N.Y., Dave Cope of Fogelsville, Pa., and Karl Dieter of Philadelphia, Pa. Lehigh spreadeagled the field in the Ic4As at Van Cortlandt Park, New York City, being charged only with 50 points against runner-up Bucknell's 102. Steele and Rogers tied for second place in 24.51 behind Dan Moynihan of Tufts who took individual laurels in 24.34. Barnes placed 13th, Bourie 14th and Strockbine 23rd. This is the third time in the last four years that Covert's teams have pulled off the double, finishing first in MAC and IC4A meets. The Chicago Lehigh Club will host the squad at a dinner Saturday night, Nov. 25, at 6 o'clock in the Stock Yard Inn adjacent to the International Amphitheatre.
