EIWA Tourney Next For Matmen Published by the Alumni Student Grants Committee, Lehigh University Alumni Association Vol. 12 - No. 19 MARCH 9, 1970 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Swimmers, Skaters Win Titles Action Starts At Penn State Friday, Mar. 13 Nine victories and a draw, in 10 bouts, provided a tuneup for Lehigh wrestlers Saturday as they made final preparations for this weekend's Eastern Tournament at Penn State. The Engineers stampeded Syracuse, 32-5,before 3,200 rooters in Grace Hall to complete their regular schedule with a 10-and- 3 record. The Easterns begin Friday afternoon, March 13. They continue Friday night and Saturday (March 14) afternoon and night. Assistant coach Mike Caruso, who will handle the squad in the tournament with veteran mentor Gerry Leeman once again sidelined by illness, appears to have only two questionable spots -- 158 and 190--in his lineup* He has adequate strength almost everywhere else topped by undefeated heavywei ght Gary Leinberger (12-0-1) , 177- pounder Steve Shields (9-1-3), 150-pounder Herb Campbell (11-2), 167-pounder Jack Bentz (9-2), and 126-pounder Dick Meyer (6-2-1), Dave Icenhower (134) has a 6-4-3 record with Jay Leeman (142) standing 7-5-1 and Ricky Mitzner (118) at 2-3. For the 158 berth he may use Rick Bacastow (4-2-3) if a knee (Continued on Page 2) 0* COACH JIM TODARO 2 Freshmen Grab Titles Lightweight Greg Surenian, 126 pounds, and 167-pounder Greg Karabin, captured titles in last weekend's Plebe Wrestling Tournament at West Point, N.Y. Two other Lehigh men, 118- pounder Randy Biggs, and 177- pounder John Rhinehart, reached the championship round only to place second, Barry Dixon of the Little Engineers finished third at 158. Assistant football coach John Whitehead took the matmen to the Military Academy in the absence of frosh mentor Mike Caruso who remained in Bethlehem to direct the Lehigh varsity against Syracuse. Gerry Leeman, veteran Engineer coach, is sidelined because of illness. Tennessee Matmen Triumph In Prep School Tournament Baylor School of Chattanooga, Tenn., making its tenth appearance in the tourney, claimed title honors last weekend in the 35th annual National College Preparatory Schools and Academies Wrestling Tournament in Grace Hall. Finals of the two-day event were held as a preliminary to the Lehigh--Syracuse dual meet. Baylor piled up 6 2 points and had the James B. Detrixhe Memorial Trophy clinched before the final round started. Hill School of Pottstown, Pa., was second with 53 and Milton Hershey School of Hershey, Pa., the defending champion, totaled 43. Rounding out the Top Five were McCallie School of Chattanooga with 41 and St. Benedict's Prep of Newark, N. J., with 38. Walt Sexton, New York Military Academy, was voted Most Out standing Wrestler laurels. He gave up only one point in the tournament and had a 1:10 fall in the finals. Hockey Squad Retains MAHL Championship Lehigh clinched its second straight Middle Atlantic Hockey League championship last week with a pair of decisive triumphs over Lafayette at Albeth Arena, 5-3 and 7-2. Coach Jim Todaro's skaters (12-2-1) upped their MAHL record to six victories in six starts. Lafayette, which began the week with a perfect 4-and-0 loop mark, was unable to match the Engineers as Lehigh displayed a well-balanced —.. offense and a tough defense featuring alternate goalies Matty Matijosich and Dave Kidd. Kidd turned away 19 shots in the 5-3 victory and Matijosich had 22 saves in the 7-2 clincher . Steve Hoerner topped the Lehigh attack with three markers, two of them in the first game. Bill McCarthy, Jeff Frey and Dave Ball each netted a pair and there were single goals by Arnie Jarmak, captain Phil Tredway and Pete DesMeules. Tredway picked up three assists with Ball getting two and Jarmak and Frey one apiece. The scoring: Lehigh 4 0 1 — 5 Lafayette 0 0 2—3 Lehigh goals; McCarthy 2t Hoernre 2, Jarmak. Alumni Gathering After Tournament Members and guests of the Nittany Valley Lehigh Alumni Club are planning a get-together at the Elks County Country Club, State College, Pa., Saturday, March 14, immediately following the final round of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Assn. championship tournament. Atherton St., State College, are president and secretary- treasurer, respectively, of the Nittany Valley Lehigh Club. Kurtossy is in charge of reservations. COACH ROY NICHOLS Tournament Is Highlight Lehigh athletic competiton this week (March 8-14) will be highlighted by participation in the annual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Assn. championship tournament at Penn State Friday and Saturday, March 13-14. The Engineers have won the most team titles (19) and individual crowns (95)in the association with the host Nittany Lions second in each category. Lehigh is expected to join defending champion Navy, and Penn State, in a battle for 1970 honors. Lehigh's indoor track team competes in an invitational meet at East Stroudsburg, Pa., State College on Saturday (March 14) headed by distance runner Tim Steele, of Boonton, N.J., who ran a 4;12 mile there last month in a quadrangular test. Mermen Stun Loop Rivals; Records Fall Fifteen Lehigh records and six conference marks were shattered by Engineer stars last weekend as they swept to a stunning victory in the Middle Atlantic Conference swimming and diving championships at Newark, Del. Coach Roy Nichols* team piled up 144 points in the three-day test against 126| for defending champion Bucknell. Lafayette and St. Joseph's tied for third with 35 followed by Lasalle 30|, American 30, West Chester 28, Temple 26, Gettysburg and Rider, 1 apiece. Delaware, the host team, failed to get on the scoreboard. Lehigh took eight first places in 18 events with Phil Hogan setting marks in the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle and competing in the winning 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Pete Harding took individual titles in the 100 and 200 breast- stroke and swam in the 400 medley. Frank Warner won the 100 backstroke and was on the 400 free and medley teams and the winning 800 freestyle relay with Bob Sine, Wayne Martin, and Al MacGregor. Saturday the Engineers smashed league records with firsts in the 200-yard breast- stroke, 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay to outpace Bucknell. Harding successfully defended his title in the 200 breaststroke (Continued on Page 2) Fortune (MVP) and Waters On MAC All-Star Quintet Bob Fortune, Lehigh's record - smashing senior basketball captain, was voted Most Valuable Player in the western section of the Middle Atlantic Conference's university division. He was picked by the coaches for the center berth on the 1969-70 sectional all-star team along with Engineer guard Johnny Waters. Others on the team were Tracy Tripucka of Lafayette and Loren Pratt of Delaware, forwards, and Rich Wallace of Rider, at guard. Ken Helfand of Delaware, another guard, also was selected after finishing in a tie for a backcourt berth. Ken Durrett, of LaSalle, was picked MVP in the eastern section. Others with him on the all-star team were Mike Hauer and Dan Kelly of St. Joseph's, Franny Murphy of LaSalle and Gordon Stiles of American. Kelly bailed out St. Joe's in its clutch playoff squeaker over Lehigh at the Penn Palestra, 65-63, netting 28 points and getting 12 of them during the final three minutes as the Engineers fought hard to record a major upset. Fortune finished his varsity career with 1,242 points and 823 rebounds, both Lehigh records, and hit his peak in the special (Continued on Page 2)
