Published by the Alumni"Student Grants Committee, Lehigh University Alumni Association Vol. 12 - No. 22 APRIL 20, 1970 BETHLEHEM, PENNA, Fast Start For LU Track Squad Sports-Scholar Dinner Monday Class Leaders, Sports Stars To Be Honored Thad Turner, coach-elect of Lehigh's 1970-71 varsity wrestling squad, makes his first appearance at a public University affair Monday, April 27, when some 300 athletes and academic leaders are honored at a mammoth banquet in the Masonic Temple, Bethlehem. The 6 p.m. dinner is being sponsored by the Student Relations Committee of the Lehigh Alumni Assn. Turner will be introduced to t.hfi_.assemblage along with the present coach, Gerry Leeman, and mentors of hockey, swimming, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, baseball, rifle, track and golf varsities. Members of those squads, along with students who have distinguished themselves academically, are to be feted* Football, soccer and lacrosse squads were honored at a banquet last December. Turner, highly-successful coach at Phillipsburg, N.J., High School, succeeds Leeman as Engineer mentor July 1 when the latter accepts a promotion to a position as assistant to director of athletics Bill Leckonby at the University. He was a two-time eastern mat champion at Lehigh, a national runnerup and twice captain of the Engineers, Kirk Pendleton, another former wrestling champion and captain, and a member of Lehigh's board of trustees, is to deliver the principal address. Pendleton and Turner were teammates in the 1960-61 season. Tickets for the alumni and the general public are on sale at the Spinning Wheel gift shop in Hotel Bethlehem, Bethlehem Sporting Goods at 213 W. 4th St., Bethlehem, and Hager's Men's Wear, 941 Hamilton St., Allentown. Lehigh students and faculty may purchase them at the student activities desk in the University Center. Joseph Workman of Bethlehem, the Rev. Joseph S. Falzone of Catasauqua, and Raymond Snyder of Allentown are co-chairmen of the general committee. Bill Leckonby, the University's director of athletics, and Dr. Albert C. Zettlemoyer, provost and vice-president, are campus members on the committee. The staff of the Alumni Assn. office also is assisting and the Lehigh Home Club and the Allentown Alumni Club occupy key roles. Distance Aces, Top Sprinter Shine As Engineers Defeat Columbia, G-burg, Bucknell SPRINTER JACK RIZZO is all alone as he finishes a relay leg against Bucknell during 97-47 Lehigh victory. Rizzo, who played fullback on last season's varsity football team, is one of the top dash men in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Lehigh's rapidly-improving track and field forces swept to three impressive triumphs in their first four outings. The Engineers trimmed Columbia, 80-65, whipped Bucknell, 97-47, and thrashed Gettysburg, 104-36. Only Delaware topped them in the early going, 89-56, on a day when premier sprinter Jack Rizzo was unable to run. Coach John Covert's squad (3-1 with five meets remaining) has its sights set on a winning campaign. A double victory by Rizzo and two three-way ties for first in the distance events gave Lehigh its opener over Columbia. Rizzo won the 100 and 220 in respective times of 10.0 and 22.7 and ran on the winning 440 relay team which was clocked in 44.5. Bob Detrick, John Heil and Scott Nicholas tied for first in the two-mile in 9:53 flat, and Heil, Tim Steele and Jack Collins tied for first in the mile in 4;37.3. Neil Tarulli also turned in key performances as he was first in the 120-yard high hurdles in 15.2 seconds in the 440 intermediates behind teammate Bob Rege and also ran on the 440 relay team. Lehigh's freshman team was also victorious 75-69. Rizzo took part in four first place finishes and Rege and . Tarulli had a hand in three as Lehigh humbled visiting Gettysburg. Rizzo won the 100 in 10.1, the 200 in 23.3, anchored the 400 relay team which won in 46.1 and ran the first leg for the victorious mile relay team that was clocked in 3:41.3. Tarulli won the 120 high hurdles in 15 seconds flat, the 440 intermediates in 62 seconds and was on the 400 relay. Rege won the 440 in 5 2.3, ran on both relays and was second in the 440 hurdles. Lehigh's John Hill won the shotput and discus with heaves of 47 feet, 2 finches and 133 feet, 1 inch and Jack Doney won the broad and high jumps with leaps (Continued on Page 2) Lacrossemen Make Bid Co-captain Tim Suhrstedt's barrage of goals and assists led the Lehigh lacrossemen to four victories in their last five outings. The Engineers defeated Stevens, 13-4, Lebanon Valley, 7-3, Muhlenberg, 17-5, and Drexel in overtime, 10-7. Coach Jim Scible's stickers fought back strong after a loss at the hands of Delaware, 7-4, and took a contending 5-and-l league record into this week's Middle Atlantic Conference action. Suhrstedt, the team's key man on attack both as a feeder and scorer, hit his peak at Muhlenberg with a 12-point outburst on five goals and seven assists. At week's end he had a total of 14 markers and 26 assists for 40 points in six league contests. Only Drexel, along with Delaware, gave the Engineers any real difficulty. The Dragons pulled into a 7-7 tie with less than three minutes remaining. Suhrstedt's third goal of the game recaptured the lead for Lehigh in overtime and a pair of markers by Ted Sauer iced the decision. 10 Baseball Team (4-6-1) Pounds Syracuse, 11-1 Sophomore southpaw Mike Friess starred Saturday as Lehigh hung an 11-1 loss on Syracuse to snap a five-game losing streak in baseball. He scattered six hits, struck out 12 and walked five. The run against him was unearned. Earlier the Engineers bowed to Penn State, 12-5, Delaware, 2-1 and 10-4, Rutgers, 4-3 in 10 innings, and Colgate, 12-1. A game at Wagner was canceled because of wet grounds. Lehigh (4-6-1) was in an overall slump when Syracuse, fresh from a 12-8 loss to Lafayette in which the Orangemen blew a 6-0 lead, couldn't put any kind of pressure on the Engineers.
