Published by the Alumni Student Grants Committee, Lehigh Universiiy Alumni Association Vol. 12 - No. 17 FEBRUARY 23, 1970 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Cagers Hope To Share Crown Wrestlers Drop 18-15 Thriller State Mat men Post Triumphs Undefeated Penn State (8-0) protected its No. 1 eastern wrestling ranking Saturday with a hard- earned triumph over Lehigh (7-3) in Grace Hall, 18-15, winning four bouts and getting draws in three others. Some 4,100 spectators, including 700 watching upstairs over closed-circuit television, witnessed the clash. It w?s the kind of touch-and- go meet associated with the Engineers and the Nittany Lions, undecided until the final buzzer. Lehigh Coach Gerry Leeman, confined to his bed because of illness, turned the varsity over to assistant Mike Caruso whose Engineer freshmen dropped a 20- 15 decision in a preliminary meet. Lehigh's Big Four, consisting of unbeaten heavyweight Gary Leinberger, eastern champion Jack Bentz, Herb Campbell and Steve Shields, could win only one bout and tie another. The victor was Shields, at 177, as he romped to an 11-1 margin against Jim Crowther, Leinberger had the draw, 1-1, against Dave Joyner. Bentz dropped the first match against an EIWA rival of his career losing to sophomore Andy Matter of the Lions, 14-5. Campbell was edged on time advantage by eastern champion Clyde Frantz, 5-4, Along with Shields, Engineer winners were Dick Meyer and Jay Leeman. Dave Icenhower and Rick Bacastow,, like Leinberger, had draws, State's victors, in addition to Frantz and Matter, were Dave Weber and John High, Weber, an undefeated youngster, came from behind to nip Ricky Mitzner at 118 pounds, 7-6, getting his winning margin on a penalty point called against him by Referee StanMousetisfor stalling in the final half-minute. Meyer had no trouble with Bruce Balmat at 126, coasting to a 10-5 margin which included a near - fall, two takedowns, a reverse and time. At 134, Icenhower fought Dana (Continued on Page 2) Coach's Comment " It was a close meet against Penn State and a hard one to lose, especially when just a couple of points could've swung things our way. We'll get another crack at those guys in the Easterns and maybe things will be a little different," , . . Mike Caruso, wrestling. Swimmers Rout Leopards To Recapture Trophy Lead Pete Harding's university and pool record of 2;17.2 in the 200 breaststroke paced Lehigh swimmers to a 65-36 rout of Lafayette on Saturday. It was an important triumph because it clinched Lehigh's first winning swim season in 12 years and it put the Engineers ahead of Lafayette in the 1969-70 all- sports trophy race, 3-2. Also outstanding for the Engineers was the winning 400- yard medley relay team of Mike Morris, Bob Thomas, Tom Nagy and Steve Van Sciver. Must Down Leopards In Last Loop Game To Pull Into Tie A late-season scoring slump, which has led to five losses in the last six games, must be shaken off tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 24) if Lehigh University's basketball forces hope to gain a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs. The Engineers host Lafayette in Grace Hall at 8 p.m. following a 6:15 p.m. preliminary game between the rival freshman squads. One of the largest crowds ever to see a basketball game at Lehigh is expected. Coach Roy Heckman*s squad dropped an 84-65 verdict to Delaware Saturday and fell out of first place in the western section of the MAC's university division for the first time all season. Lehigh is 6-3 in the league and 11-12 overall. Lafayette won at Gettysburg, 83-74, to take the loop lead with a 7-2 mark. The Leopards are 12-12 overall. Rider, which won its final loop game at Bucknell last Friday, has a 7-3 league record and is assured of a play off spot because of two triumphs over Lafayette, a split with Lehigh and a better overall record than either of the area teams. If Lehigh can snap its slump upon returning to Grace Hall, and defeat Lafayette, the Engineers will finish in a 3-way tie with the Leopards and Rider for western section laurels. All will be 7-3. The Engineers then would point to a seasonal split with Lafayette and a 12-12 overall mark against a 12-13 record for the Leopards and lay claim to the No. 2playoff position behind Rider. Lafayette , if able to down Lehigh for the second time, would win sectional honors with an 8-2 mark and get the No. 1 playoff position with Rider No. 2. "We're still very much in the picture," says Heckman, "and a victory tonight would give us a share of the sectional championship." MAC Basketball, Western Section w P.C. Lafayette 7 2 .778 Rider 7 3 .700 Lehigh 6 3 .667 Delaware 5 4 .556 Bucknell 3 6 .333 Gettysburg 0 10 .000 Tuesday (Feb. 24)--Lafayette at Lehigh, 8 p.m., Delaware at BucknelL (End of league schedule). The Engineers have been two different teams this season with a 9-1 record at home and a 2-11 log on the road. Rutgers is the only squad able to defeat them in Grace Hall, 79-68, and they're counting upon a return to the home floor to once again sharpen their shooting. There are some interesting "ifs" connected with tonight's banner attraction. If Lehigh wins, and moves into the MAC playoffs, a Saturday afternoon game at home against Drexel will be cancelled. If the Engineers lose they'll play that Saturday contest and it'll be the final home appearance for seniors Bob Fortune, Frank Babic and Art Schiel. If victorious over Lafayette and moving into playoff action, the senior trio will be making its last home showing tonight. Fortune, a prime candidate for all-league and all-East honors, already holds a Lehigh career (Continued on Page 2) Coach's Comment "We just haven't been able to put that ball in the hoop recently during a long cold spell. Naturally, it's hoped that a return to our home floor will ignite the spark again. We've played well there all season." . . . Roy Heckman, basketball. Frosh Cagers Stand 15-1 Victories over Lafayette and Delaware last week hiked the brilliant Lehigh frosh basketball team's seasonal record to 15-1. Coach Bob Kennedy's Little Engineers came from behind to rap Lafayette, 75-69, and walloped Delaware, 73-59. The victory at Lafayette found Larry Lloyd of Reading, Pa., popping in three straight one-hand- ers in the final moments to complete a strong uphill drive. The lineups: LEHIGH FR.
