Cagers Shoot For MAC Crown Published by the Alumni Student Grants Committee, Lehigh 'University Alumni Association Vol. 12 - No. 16 FEBRUARY 16, 1970 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Wrestlers Trample Army, 30-5 Engineer Quintet Has 6-1 Loop Mark; 3 Games Left Shaking off a 3-game losing streak with a victory over Gettysburg, 7 2-63, Lehigh University cagers were poised this week for a bid to clinch first place in the western section of the Middle Atlantic Conference university division. Coach Roy Heckman's team, 11-10 overall and 6-1 in the league, has crucial road tests scheduled at Lafayette on Wednesday, Feb. 18, and Delaware on Saturday, Feb. 21. The tenth, and final, loop attraction is slated for Tuesday night, Feb. 24, in Grace Hall when Lafayette comes to town for a second meeting with the Engineers. Big Bob Fortune led the way against Gettysburg with 25 points and 18 rebounds as the Engineers bounced back following losses at N.Y.U., 89-72, and Rider, 65-61. Fortune was also the point pace-setter against Rider, with 17, while Johnny Waters led the team against N.Y.U. with 19. The setback at Trenton, N.J., to Rider, was Lehigh's first in conference play following five victories. The Engineers battled back from a 20-8 deficit tomove out front in the second half,only to fall back again and find the score deadlocked at 55 with five minutes remaining. Rider sank 10 free throws to conclude its scoring. Against Gettysburg the Engineers also needed a come« from-behind effort, after falling behind by nine points in the first half, to prevail. The Lehigh quintet took charge after the intermission and Gettysburg tumbled to its eighth loop loss in eight tries. Water helped with 16 points and Scott Beeten and Ken Etra each had 11. Against N.Y.U., in New York, the Engineers suffered a cold spell during the first half and never could recover. Twice they cut the Violets' lead to 12 points, after halftime, but each time N.Y.U. managed to wage a successful counter-move. (Continued on Page 2) Varsity Skaters Shut Out MIT Lehigh's skaters blanked Massachusetts Institute of Technology 4-0 for their sixth win of the season. Scoring for Lehigh were Bruce Frail, Don Brockway, Bill Tredway and Amy Jarmak. Engineers with assists were Paul Guilfoyle, Steve Horner, Doug Paige, Bill McCarty and Tredway. Bentz, Bacastow Score Falls In Cadet Rout; Frosh Win Jersey Alumni Planning Dinner Members of the Lehigh Alumni Club of Northern New Jersey are planning a special dinner in the University faculty dining room Saturday, Feb. 21, before attending a wrestling meet between Lehigh and Penn State. There will be a reception at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 5:30. Rich Bacastow and Jack Bentz chipped in with falls last Saturday, and heavyweight Gary Leinberger remained undefeated and untied, as Lehigh wrestlers battered Army before 3,400 fans at Grace Hall, 30-5. In a preliminary meet the Engineer frosh turned back Army's Plebes, 19-14. It was only the second loss for the Cadets in eight meets. , Coach Gerry Leeman's varsity, at home following five meets on the road, recovered fully from a setback at the Naval Academy to make Army its seventh victim in nine appearances. The surprisingly-easy victory clinched the 18th consecutive winning season for Lehigh's grapplers. grapplers. They have four meets remaining. It set the stage for a climactic collision in Grace Hall Saturday night (Feb. 21) when Penn State, conqueror of Navy last weekend, imvades the Lehigh campus. WLVT, Channel 39 of the Bethlehem-Allentown area, and WFIL, Channel 6 of Philadelphia, Steele Runs 4:12 Mile Tim Steele, Lehigh's MAC cross country champion, turned in the fastest mile in Engineer track history during a triangular test against West Chester and East Stroudsburg in the ESSC Coach's Comment "Against Army we looked like a pretty strong club and we all know there can't be any kind of a letdown with Penn State coming into Grace Hall. I think we'll be ready for them. We always seem to do our best against that kind of opposition, especially at home.". . . Gerry Leeman, wrestling. Swimmers Dunk 2 Rivals Frank Warner, Bob Sine and Pete Harding led Lehigh swimmers to victories over Columbia, 6 2-37, and Gettysburg, 6 2-32, bringing the seasonal record to five triumphs against three defeats. Engineer freshmen defeated the same opponents, Columbia 66-25 and Gettysburg 54-44. In the Columbia meet Warner was on two winning relay teams and won the 200 backstroke. Bacastow and Bentz clinched the Army meet with their falls, giving the Engineers a 21-5 margin with three bouts remaining. Bacastow flattened Bob Powers in 7:42 at 158 pounds and Bentz, looking the part of a two- time EIWA champion, disposed of Jerry Williams in 1:56 of their 167-pound clash. Victorious via decisions were 126-pounder Dick Meyer, 6-3 over Scott Patten; 134-pounder Dave Icenhower, 13-6 over Mike Mullady; 150-pounder Herb Campbell, 3-0 over Bill McBeth; 177-pounder Steve Shields, 11-3 over Ray Ritacco; 190-pounder Scott Christie, 4-1 over Joe Ferraro, and Leinberger at heavyweight, 13-5 over Kurt Meyer. Lehigh's other two points were provided by 142-pounder Jay Leeman as he struck back in the final seconds of a thrilling bout to reverse Bill James of the Cadets and get a well deserved draw, 10-10. Army's only winner, 118- pounder Larry Baltezore, came from behind in the final period to down Ricky Mitzner, 8-5. Engineer lightweights, who had fallen behind 16-0 at Navy, redeemed themselves against Army. They gave the team an 8-5 advantage after the first four bouts and Lehigh won every additional test. Lee man's Big Four of Bentz (8-1), Campbell (8-1), Leinberger (9-0) and Shields (6-1-2) had little difficulty. Only Campbell, who always seems to draw tough opposition, was threatened. McBeth, the Army captain, rode the star sophomore the entire third period but Campbell prevailed with a near- fall in the second. The get-together will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Candlelight Room. Coaches Gerry Leeman and Mike Caruso of Lehigh and Bill Koll and Rich Lorenzo of Penn State will discuss this year's teams and their freshman prospects. Movies of last year's Eastern Tournament will be shown. Reservations may be made by contacting either Lee Barthold of The Lehigh Home Club at 694-5857 or Ted Hardy of The Penn State Club at 694-5481. All alumni, wives, and friends of wrestling in the Lehigh Valley are invited.
