The SoM thilMili n taineer Published by the Alumni Student Grants Committee, Lehigh University Alumni Association Vol. 12 - No. 15 FEBRUARY 9, 1970 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Cagers Finish 6-1 Home Stand Matmen Bow To Eastern Champs Navy Wrestlers Victorious; Leinberger Still Unbeaten Lehigh's Big Four of Gary Leinberger, Jack Bentz, Herb Campbell and Steve Shields scored 11 points Saturday but the Engineers couldn't locate enough supporting help for them during a 23-13 loss to Navy's defending Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Assn. champions. It was the fifth straight meet away from home for the Engineers (6-2) who return to Grace Hall Saturday night, Feb. 14, for freshman and varsity tests against Army. The Lehigh frosh also bowed to Navy, 17-16, in their second appearance of the campaign. Earlier they drubbed Cornell 34-6. Navy piled up a 16-0 lead sweeping the first four bouts, two of them by falls, and the Engineers fell too far behind to seriously threaten the midshipmen whose only loss this season is to Oklahoma. In the opening bout Tom Schuler of Navy pinned Arnie Bramow. Lew Mason followed with a fall over Ricky Mitzner, a late replacement for Dave Waters when the latter failed to make weight, and the Middies had a 10-0 advantage. EIWA champion Dale Stahl trimmed Dave Icenhower, 5-1, and Lloyd Keaser completed the early sweep by beating Jay Leeman, 10-3. Campbell put Lehigh on the scoreboard with another convincing performance at 150, He whippped previously-undefeated Andy Tolk, 15-3, barely failing to get a fall. Rick Bacastow battled to a 1-1 draw with EIWA champ Bob Christianson at 158 and Bentz followed with a 12-3 rout of Tommy Tomlinson in their 167- pound scrap. Navy led 18-8 and Lehigh needed a sweep of the final three bouts, with at least one fall, to salvage the victory. Bentz, like Campbell, struggled valiantly for a pin but couldn't quite manage it. When Ben Welch of the Middies held Shields to a 2-2 stalmate, at 177, the Navy team maintained its 10-point advantage going into the last two bouts and couldn't (Continued on Page 2) JOHN WATERS o 0 .sets record First Loss For Frosh Basketball Team (10-1) Lehigh's freshman basketball team, after extending its undefeated streak through the first 10 games of the season, was beaten Lehigh-State TV Feature Seven television stations, in Pennsylvania and New York, will offer a delayed viewing of Lehigh University's home wrestling meet Feb. 21 against Penn State.
