LEHIGHNOW April 17, 2002 Volume 2, Issue 14 IN BRIEF COMING UP New phone system to be installed During May, Lehigh University's telecommunications department will complete the installation of the new Intecom Pointspan telephone system. The final transition will occur over three weekends: May 3-5, May 17-19 and May 24-26. To determine when your building will be affected by this work, consult the project web page at http: / / www.lehigh.edu / phones / replace.html. Due to the amount of work involved, service to the affected buildings will be interrupted at noon on each respective Friday. Service will be restored on a rolling basis as the new phones are installed and tested on Saturday and Sunday. Some phones, such as blue-light emergency phones, power failure phones (listed on page 2 of the Campus Directory) and pay phones will still be available for use during the service outages. Any calls that ■ come into regular phone lines during the service outage can still be picked up by voice mail. For more information, call the project hotline at ext-86600 or Lizanne Hurst at ext-85014. Lehigh researchers earn EPA grant Don Morris, associate professor of earth and environmental sciences, and a group of distinguished Lehigh colleagues have been awarded a three-year, $825,000 EPA grant to study environmental factors regulating the exposure of streams and rivers to solar UV radiation. According to Morris, an aquatic ecosystem ecologist, it is the first major study to investigate the interactive effects of landscape, climate and UV radiation on river ecosystems. The grant was awarded through the STAR (Science To Achieve Results) Program, part of the EPA's National Center for Environmental Research. The study will focus on how current watershed and river properties interact with climate and solar radiation to determine current UV exposure, and how living organisms have adapted in order to survive this UV exposure. In addition to Morris, the multidisciplinary team includes Craig Williamson, professor of earth and environmental sciences; Frank Pazzaglia, associate professor of earth and environmental sciences; Rick Weisman, professor of civil engineering, and Bruce Hargreaves, associate professor of earth and environmental The image above was taken from a poster created by Marvin Simmons, director of University Design, for this event. Former Australian foreign minister to deliver Cohen Lecture Gareth Evans, a 21-year member of the Australian Parliament and current chief executive of the International Crisis Group (ICG), will deliver the 16th Annual Cohen International Relations Lecture at Lehigh at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in Baker Hall of the Zoellner Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. Evans' talk, "Confronting the Challenge of Terrorism: International Relations after 9-11," will highlight how international crisis has taken on new significance in the past six months and how the international community is becoming increasingly polarized. "Mr. Evans is a fabulous speaker with a unique perspective," says Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh University. "Name the hot spot around the world, and Mr. Evans is there gaining a ground-level perspective. It is an honor to welcome a leader of his stature to the Lehigh Valley." Since January 2000, Evans has served as president and chief executive of the Brussels-based office of ICG, a private advocacy organization committed to improving the way the international community responds to crises. He was also recently appointed co-chair of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty. Evans resigned from the Australian Parliament in September 1999. He was the longest serving parliamentary member of the Australian Labor Party. He is best known internationally as foreign minister for his role in founding APEC in 1989, and for developing the U.N. Peace Plan for Cambodia. The Cohen International Relations Lecture Series is made possible by an endowment from the late Bernard L. Cohen, a 1936 Lehigh graduate, and his wife, Bertha Finkelstein Cohen, a 1937 graduate of Moravian College.
