David Tracy, professor of theology at the University of Chicago, will give the main address at the baccalaureate service at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, in Packer Memorial Church. Forbes will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree, as did his father, the late Malcolm Forbes, former publisher of Forbes, in 1984. Tracy will receive an honorary doctor of divinity degree. Three others will receive honorary degrees: Harold A. "Hap" Wagner (doctor of engineering), a Lehigh trustee and CEO of Air Products and Chemicals Inc.; Andrew H. Knoll '73 (doctor of science), professor of biology at Harvard, and Wendy Wasserstein (doctor of humane letters), award- winning author and playwright. "Steve Forbes is an extremely prominent figure in the business and political arena," said Kristina Theiss, senior class president. "We are honored to have him as the 130th Commencement speaker." "We are genuinely excited to have such a recognized public figure speak at the university," said William C. Hittinger, interim president. "His achievements serve Forbes Tracy Wagner Knoll Wasserstein as an example to Lehigh's graduates." Forbes, a frequent guest on national news programs, is the only four-time winner of the Crystal Owl Award, which is given by USX Corp. to the financial journalist whose annual economic forecasts prove most accurate. He has expanded Forbes Inc. to include lifestyle and technology supplements, a Japanese-language edition, and a black history magazine, American Legacy. From 1985 to 1993, Forbes was chairman of International Broadcasting, where he supervised the operation of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty. From 1993 to 1996, Forbes chaired Empower America, a political reform group founded by Jack Kemp, Bill Bennett and Jeanne Kirkpatrick. He campaigned for the 1996 Republican presidential nomination, then became chairman of Americans for Hope, Growth and Opportunity. Tracy earned a licentiate and a doctorate in theology from Gregorian University in Rome, and began teaching at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., before joining the faculty at Chicago in 1969. He is author of six books, including Blessed Rage for Order: The New Pluralism in Theology, Dialogue with the Other and On Naming the Present. He has co-authored, edited and contributed to two dozen more.He has lectured in North America, Europe, China and Israel, and he was president of the Catholic Theological Society of America in 1977-78. Wagner joined Air Products in 1963, rose to president of Air Products Europe in 1988, company president in 1991 and CEO in 1992. He is a director of CIGNA Corp., United Technologies Corp., and Daido-Hoxan - Japan's second- largest industrial gas company. He is a member of the Policy Committee of the national Business Roundtable, chairman of the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable, and a member of KidsPeace National Council for Kids. Knoll earned a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1977, joined its faculty in 1982 and was appointed chairman of its department of organismic and evolutionary biology in 1992. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. Knoll has served as editor or editorial board member for a dozen journals, including Paleobiology, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Geology, and Precambrian Research. He has published almost 200 papers and 100 abstracts, delivered 222 invited lectures at research institutions around the world, and served as a visiting scientist in Sweden, Australia, England, Japan and the u.s.fgHgl Wasserstein won the 1993 Outer Critics Circle Award and a Tony nomination for her play The Sisters Rosensweig. The Heidi Chronicles, another of her plays, received a grant from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays and earned her the 1989 Pulitzer Prize and a host of other awards. In 1993, Wasserstein received the William Inge Award for Distinguished Achievement in American Theatre. Wasserstein's latest play, An American Daughter, was produced by Lincoln Center Theatre on Broadway last year. She wrote the screenplay for the recently released movie, The Object of My Affection. Robert M. Madigan to speak at Honors Convocation Robert M. Madigan '88, founder and president of Madigan Consulting Ltd., will speak at the Honors Convocation on Sunday, April 26. The event, which recognizes 375 honor students, begins at 2 p.m. in Packer Memorial Church. Madigan, who has a B.S. in mechanical engineering, worked as a consultant for Arthur Andersen in New York City before starting a local consulting firm in 1989. Madigan Consulting Ltd. serves manu- Madigan facturers, governments, educational and non-profit organizations in the mid- Atlantic region. Two of its clients received the 1997 Pennsylvania Business of the Year award- At Lehigh, Madigan was active in tutoring, intramural sports and the Jazz Band. He received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Best Student Paper Award. Madigan is a member of the Alumni Association's reunion committee and chairman of his class reunion committee. He holds board positions at the American Diabetes Association, Northeastern Pennsylvania Technology County, Bethlehem Economic Development Organization, Historic Bethlehem, Inc., Bethlehem Rotary Club and the Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley. -Linda Harbrecht Ed College to welcome undergrads Starting next fall, the College of Education will offer a five- year combined degree and teacher-certification program so students can earn a bachelor's and master's degree in five years instead of the traditional six. The program leads to a B.A. or B.S. from the College of Arts and Sciences, an MA. or M.Ed, in elementary or secondary education, and an Instructional I teaching certificate from the state Department of Education. Lehigh is approved by the state for 12 areas of certification at the elementary and secondary levels. Ray Bell, chair of the department of education and human services, says the program will help Lehigh attract students who know early in their college career that they are interested in education. Previously, undergraduates were limited to a minor in the education college.
