"Being on the Goodman Campus," said Dunn, "we don't get the daily interaction with students that other departments have." Dunn and Terry Csaszar, secretary/assistant at Stabler, decided to host a trivia contest on Lehigh's network server. The arena's information board is one of the most highly accessed on the server. Dunn and Csaszar both felt the contest would be a way to keep visitors coming back and to inspire newcomers to check out the board. "We thought 'what is a way we could better connect with students and, at the same time, teach them what Stabler does?'" said Dunn. "What better way than trivia!" The contest was open to all students and ran for 10 weeks, concluding the first week in December. Questions were drawn from past Stabler events, both musical and athletic, as well as from general entertainment trivia, and were posted weekly during "normal Stabler working hours." These hours ranged from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. depending on the event being hosted. Knouse will receive two free tickets to a Stabler event of his choice during 1998. Leichliter's second prize was a framed collage of backstage passes from past Stabler concerts. Bellows obtained a $30 food voucher to be used at any Stabler event. "But what's special about that is that David will receive a menu in his seat and be able to order what he wants that way," said Dunn. "Richard Fritz, the director of the building [Stabler], will serve him his food. It's kind of an interesting twist." Bellows didn't expect anything to come of the contest. "I didn't think I would win anything," he said. The Board of Trustee approved the parameters at its meeting on Jan. 9. The parameters were developed by the Planning and Budgeting Working Group, a team of 12 people which included all the deans, vice presidents, two faculty representatives, and the president. The group solicited input from the campus about budget priorities as it developed the budget during the fall. "The primary concerns we heard from the campus were the need to improve faculty and staff salaries, increase academic department budgets, and take a close look at our ancillary activities (such as Ben Franklin, MRC, and the Discovery Center)," said Interim President Bill Hittinger. The team focused on the first two issues, and will take a closer look at the ancillary operations during the spring. All salary raises will continue to be based on merit. The salary line was increased by 3.5 percent, but that will NOT be the average raise in every department, as all deans and vice presidents are withholding some of that amount for merit raises across department lines. (By comparison, last year the salary budget increased by only 3 percent.) On the faculty side, the provost will hold 0.5 percent for promotions, equity and merit adjustments, and the deans will hold 1 percent for a merit pool. Faculty department chairs therefore will have a 2 percent increase to allocate for merit. "(Provost) Nelson Markley would like to see the top 20 percent of the faculty get raises in the 5-8 percent range," said Associate Provost Patti Ota, filling in for Markley at the meeting. "That is only possible if the deans have a pool of money to allocate. Otherwise departments with many outstanding faculty can only give each a small increase." On the staff side, each vice president will hold 0.4 percent for an interdepartmental merit pool and an additional 0.35 percent will be held for equity adjustments. Therefore department chairs will have 2.75 percent to allocate in raises. "Salary increments were one of our highest priorities," said Vice President Rhonda Gross.
