The day-long event was held in recognition of the many who volunteer their time and efforts to support Lehigh. The Alumni Association presented the Good Neighbor Award to Ryan and the Friend of Lehigh Award to the Bahrenburgs, parents of Casey Bahrenburg '97. The awards were given at halftime by George Shoffner '75, president of the alumni association. The Good Neighbor Award is given to a resident of the community who has shown a consistent and friendly interest in all, or specific Lehigh affairs. The Friend of Lehigh Award is given to a non-alumnus who has displayed a significant and helpful interest in Lehigh. Ryan entered Lehigh with the Class of '46. During his freshman year, World War II broke out and Ryan joined the military. He served four years in the military before being honorably discharged with the rank of 1st Sergeant in the Airborne Division. He returned to Bethlehem and decided to follow in his father's footsteps by becoming a professional photographer. He attended the New York Institute of Photography, and joined the family business, Ryan Studio/Photo Lab, which was established by his father, Jim Ryan, in Bethlehem in 1919. His 45-year association with Lehigh was cemented over the years as Ryan photographed sports activities, graduation, public events and portraits, until he closed his photo business in February 1998. The Bahrenburgs' association with Lehigh began when their daughter, Casey, arrived on campus in the fall of 1993. Although they were supportive of their daughter's record-setting performances as a member of the swim team, they were also sensitive to the importance of enhancing educational opportunities for students. They joined the Parents' Fund Executive Committee at the start of the Preserving the Vision campaign, led a successful parent effort as chairpersons in the New York City area, and. chaired the Parents' Committee in 1996-97. K5I Nelson Markley, provost and vice president for academic affairs, recently announced that a search committee has been formed to find a new dean for the College of Business and Economics. This successor will replace Patti Ota, who will be returning to her duties as vice provost in a full-time capacity. Ota took over for James Schmotter, who previously held the position. Ron Yoshida, dean of the College of Education, will head the search committee. Members of this committee include: Berrisford Boothe, associate professor of art and architecture; Mary Lynn Breiner, college coordinator, College of Business & Economics; Andrew Conner '99, economics, finance and history major; Paul Leitner, trustee, chair of the Business Advisory Committee, and principal, The Leitner Thomas Group; Judith McDonald, associate professor of economics; Vincent Munley, professor and chairperson of the department of economics; Eunice Santos, assistant professor in the department of electrical engineering and computer science; Susan Sherer, associate professor of business; Kenneth Sinclair, professor of business, Michelle Valentin, the coordinator and also a non-voting member, senior personnel assistant, office of the president and provost; and Jeffry Young, an MBA student. "Last year was an exciting year for the College of Business and Economics and it is now strategically well-positioned to attract an outstanding new leader to Lehigh," said Markley. "Under dean Ota's able leadership the College approved a new, exciting MBA curriculum, began developing an integrated undergraduate curriculum, and completed a comprehensive strategic planning process with a grant from the Ernst and Young Foundation. We all believe this is the ideal time to launch a national search for a new dean." Faculty and staff are asked to submit names of possible candidates and the qualities they would like to see in the next CBE dean to any member of the committee with a copy to Yoshida at the office of the president and provost in the Alumni Memorial Building, 27 Memorial Drive West. The goal is to select a new dean by next spring, with a starting date at Lehigh next summer.
