The appointment was announced by William C. Hittinger '44, interim president. Smith will resign as mayor but help with the transition until January when a new mayor is sworn in. "This transition is possible because of Lehigh's willingness to work with the city," Smith said. "Lehigh and Bethlehem have a long history of working together cooperatively. With President Hittinger's assurance that I will be able to work with an interim mayor and the mayor-elect after Nov. 4 on an 'as needed' basis, I am confident we will accomplish a smooth transition with the next administration in January." Smith replaces Michael G. Bolton '65, who left the university Sept. 1 to become a managing director of Safeguard Scientifics Inc., Wayne, Pa. "Ken Smith is uniquely qualified for this position, which requires strong relationships with Bethlehem, the state and the federal government," said Hittinger. "I am confident he will continue to improve upon the community, government and industry partnerships Mike Bolton established. " At a news conference at Zoellner Arts Center, James Delgrosso, president of Bethlehem City Council, said, "I thought he was an excellent mayor. I think the city moved forward during his 10 years. Our downtown districts are thriving—both north and south sides." Smith will oversee the university relations, government relations, and community relations functions. "I am extremely excited about this new challenge," said Smith. "It affords me an opportunity to continue to serve Bethlehem, which is undergoing a remarkable transformation, as well as to support my alma mater, which I believe is one of the finest institutions of higher education in America today. "As mayor, I've worked with many fine people at Lehigh to improve relations between the city and the university and to encourage economic development of Bethlehem and its surrounding communities," said Smith.
