Markley, also a professor of mathematics at Maryland, is a nationally renowned scholar who has been a leader in emphasizing the importance of a mathematically literate work force and encouraging effective measures to improve mathematics education. Pense, who retired in December after almost 40 years at Lehigh—six of which were spent as provost. "I am pleased to appoint Nelson Markley provost at Lehigh," said President Peter Likins. "He brings strong skills in academic administration and 30 years of experience as a faculty member at a major university. I have absolute confidence in his ability to work effectively with all constituents to set priorities and make the decisions necessary for advancing the Lehigh agenda." "I also wish to thank the members of the provost search committee, led by committee chair Prof. J. I am looking forward to moving back to the Lehigh Valley and helping the university continue its rapid progress towards increasing academic excellence and national prominence." Markley has written more than two dozen published articles on a variety of themes in dynamical systems. He is also the author of a textbook, Introduction to Probability, which is in its second edition. During his 30-year career at Maryland, Markley chaired the university's highly ranked department of mathematics and also chaired a committee that restructured and revitalized the campus honors program, which now ranks among the top in the country. Before his current appointment, he was associate vice president for academic affairs. He helped create the Maryland Mathematics Coalition, which brought together leaders from business, industry, government and education, and he has served for many years as an officer of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, the umbrella organization of American mathematics. Born in Reading, Pa., and raised in the nearby community of Hamburg, Markley earned his bachelor's degree from Lafayette College in 1962, and his master's and doctoral degrees from Yale University. She will retain some of those responsibilities, and will bear the title "vice provost and dean of the College of Business and Economics." "In her role as dean, Ota's primary mission is to lead the faculty in its response to the challenges of assuring continuation of accreditation by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) beyond the year 2000, when the next review is scheduled, " said President Peter Likins. "When progress with this mission permits Ota to return to full-time duties as vice provbst, probably in two to four years, she will happily do so. By that point we will have identified a new dean for the college through a national search.
