Ulrich "Lehigh is extremely fortunate to have had Bill Hittinger as board chairman for the past six years," said Pres. Peter Likins. Bill and Ron share a genuine love for this place, and they believe that Lehigh provides a unique learning experience that is of the right character for these interesting times." "I feel privileged to have been a student here, and now I feel especially honored to succeed a great leader like Bill Hittinger," said Ulrich '66. Smyth, the Paul B. The Academy, which advises the federal government on issues relating to technology and scientific research, chose Smyth for his lifelong work in defect chemistry and the chemistry of electronic ceramics. Smyth, who directed Lehigh's Materials Research Center for 21 years, is praised by Smyth colleagues for the breadth of his knowledge and research, and for his hard work, modesty and ability to communicate. Pres. Peter Likins, himself a member ofthe Academy, said Smyth's selection was "a tribute to Lehigh's interdisciplinary philosophy as well as to Don hin\self. Few universities have faculty who bridge the boundaries dividing academic disciplines, departments and colleges the way Don has done. It is quite remarkable that he spans such intellectual space and still achieves such a deep understanding of his own field." Lehigh provost Alan W. Pense, another Academy member, said the Academy had recognized Smyth's "very distinguished activities, his outstanding research and his leadership in professional organizations." David B. Williams, chairman and Harold Chambers Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, said, "Don just does superb work.
