Specter answers questions from the audience. Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Arlen Specter gave the twentieth Tresolini Law Lecture titled "The Disintegration of America's Political Center" on Nov. 11. During his address, he argued that the '94 congressional election placing the republicans in control of the House and Senate was a reaction to the perception that the democrats, controlling the executive and legislative branches, wandered too far from the center after the '92 presidential election. Similarly, according to Specter, the failure of the republicans to unite government under a republican president with a republican House and Senate was a reaction against the perception that republicans in power have wandered too far from the center since '94. Specter, in closing, concluded that "To do more than react, the American electorate must become involved in the primary process. For the present the democrats through President Clinton have articulated the centrist rhetoric. They can talk to the talk. It remains to be seen if they can walk the walk. For the republicans, we must motivate the centrists to get of the sidelines and onto the playing fields if we are to compete effectively in the year 2000." Cancer Research Mile named Alvin Cohen (far left) reads the proclamation from Peter Likins declaring the walk from top of the Hill between Zeta Psi and Alpha Phi down to Rathbone Dining Hall "The Cancer Research Mile."
