Photos by Elizabeth Keegin Colley by Stephanie Cobrin The 13 juniors recently chosen as lacocca Scholars caught a glimpse of a true leader when they met with their biggest fan and supporter — Lee lacocca '45 — at the lacocca Scholar Induction Ceremony Oct. 17. The former CEO and chairman of Chrysler Corporation greeted both the new members and the 12 senior lacocca Scholars honored at the reception held in lacocca Hall. Following a ceremonious candle lighting, lacocca handed each scholar certificates marking their membership in the program. His participation meant a great deal to new members. "For us to meet the man whose name is on the program only made the night more perfect," said Ronnie Brandes '98, a recent inductee and math major. Throughout the course of the evening, the scholars had their pictures taken with lacocca and a representative from each class read a letter thanking him for his significant involvement with the group. Kathleen Kerrigan '97, an lacocca Scholar and senior accounting major, was touched by lacocca's response to the students remarks. Kerrigan said, "He told us that it was an honor for his name to be associated with such a fine group of students." Later, lacocca Professors, scholars, proud parents and the lacocca family took part in celebrating his 72 birthday, which was Oct. 15. Partiers shouted out "Happy Birthday" and dined on special birthday cake. Earlier that day at the lacocca Leadership Series, held in the Wood Dining Room, lacocca presented the keynote address, "The Importance of Vision and Leadership to Competitive Success," to students and some 200 national and international industry leaders. In his talk, lacocca revealed the secrets to his success. "Be pragmatic," he said. "Hire good people and set the right priorities." A town hall session followed, during which people asked questions and shared ideas with lacocca. In attendance was Jennifer Tzeses '97, an English major and member ofthe Martindale Program. "It was great to hear him speak," she said. "He's so successful- yet he was still so personable and able to relate to everyone in the room."
