CONTENTS ngratulations 3S lmencement PEOPLE: Nancy Vomen s 11 12 'I* III es' SOUTH MOUNTAINEER LEHIGHWEEK Volume 8, Issue 28 For the Campus Community Four to receive honorary degrees Four outstanding individuals will receive honorary doctoral degrees in recognition of their lifetime achievements at the University's 127th Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 28. Nearly 1150 seniors and graduate students will be awarded degrees during the exercises. Pres. Peter Likins will confer honorary degrees on commencement speaker Catherine Crier, Stephen J. Benkovic, John S. Mayo and baccalaureate speaker Rev. William H. Willimon. Crier will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Commencement. Catherine Crier A broadcast journalist, state judge, trial lawyer and professor, Crier joined ABC in 1993 as a correspondent on "20/20," the network's primetime newsmagazine. She is also a regular substitute for Peter Stephen J. Benkovic Jennings on "World News Tonight" and Ted Koppel on "Nightline." Crier came to ABC following three years at Cable News Network (CNN), where she was co- anchor of both "Inside John S. Mayo Politics '92," a daily examination of the 1992 political process, and "The World Today," the premiere evening newscast. She also hosted "Crier and Company," a live, half-hour show where a panel of May 24,1995 female policy experts discussed national and international issues. Before her career in television news, Crier was a state district judge, presiding over the 162nd District Court of Dallas County, Texas. She earned her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Texas and her J.D. from Southern Methodist University School of Law. Willimon, dean of the Chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke University, will receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree (see accompanying story). continued on page 2 Duke prof, speaks at Baccalaureate and receives honorary degree Rev. William H. Willimon, dean of the Chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke University, will give the Baccalaureate Address on Sat., May 27 at 7 p.m. in Packer Memorial Church. The ecumenical Baccalaureate service is open to the public (no tickets required). Author of 37 books on preaching, pastoral care and practical theology, Willimon preaches each Sunday in the Duke Chapel at the center of Duke's campus and directs programs of campus ministry there. He also serves as a professor in the Duke Divinity School and teaches his popular course, "The Search for Meaning," to undergraduates. Willimon's books include Sighing for Rev. William H. Willimon Eden and What's Right about the Church. His Worship As Pastoral Care was selected as one of the ten most useful books for pastors in 1979 by the Academy of Parish Clergy. Nearly a million copies of his books have been sold. His articles have appeared in many publications, ■ including The Christian Ministry, Quarterly Review, Liturgy, Worship and Christianity Today. He is editor-at-large for The Christian Century. Willimon earned his bachelor's degree from Wofford College, a master's of divinity from Yale Divinity School and a doctorate from Emory University. He has served as a pastor of churches in Georgia and South Carolina. photo by John Kish IV Another STAR Ready Ramana Phillips, Freedom High School senior, (center) is presented with a Northampton Community College sweatshirt from Henry Odi, assistant provost, during the STAR Program closing lunch on May 6. Phillips also received a scholarship from the STAR parents group. Phillips, here with his parents, plans to transfer to a four-year college after completing NCC. He is the third STAR student to graduate high school since the program started in 1989. The Program (Students That Are Ready) has grown to where it now has 100 sixth grade through high-school students matched with Lehigh student tutors. The STAR graduating class will grow to five students next spring and ten in '97.
