Gunton, dean ofthe College of Arts and Science, has accepted the position of provost of Kenyon College, Ohio, effective July 1. Provost Alan Pense said he will consult with members ofthe college faculty to select an interim dean as soon as possible. Gunton, who joined Lehigh as dean in 1988, said, "This is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. I have been very happy at Lehigh and believe that, especially with the Zoellner Ails Center almost a reality, some truly great years lie ahead for the university." Kenyon is a small undergraduate liberal arts college with strong programs in the social sciences and the humanities. Gunton and his wife Peggy will be moving to Gambier, Ohio this summer. Gunton, whose scholarly field is physics, was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. "As difficult as it will be to leave Lehigh, joining an institution as highly respected and as dedicated to the liberal arts as Kenyon was an opportunity I could not pass up," Gunton said. "I am going to miss the many great friends I have made during my years here. That will be the most difficult and painful price to pay for this opportunity." Before joining Lehigh, Gunton was director ofthe Center for Advanced Computational Science at Temple University where, since 1970, he also had been a professor of physics and director ofthe Institute for Surface and Interface Science. From 1966 to 1968, he was a lecturer in physics at the University of Western Australia. During his tenure as dean at Lehigh, he published more than 25 scholarly articles and has been continually funded by the National Science.Foundation. I expect to welcome him as a fellow president soon, because that job will beckon to him before long. We are fortunate to have benefitted from his leadership at Lehigh, and I feel personally fortunate to have known him as a friend. President Peter Likins 99 has taught a course entitled "Physics for Poets" and currently teaches "Arts and Science I: Choices and Decisions" for incoming freshmen. He also was .an adviser to 22 freshmen during the past year, and throughout his career has advised more than 30 doctoral and postdoctoral students. Continued on page 10 Five Tb Receive Honorary Degrees Five outstanding individuals will receive honorary doctoral degrees in recognition of their lifetime achievements at the University's 126th Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 29. Nearly 1200 graduating seniors and graduate students will be awarded degrees during the Commencement exercises. Pres. Peter Likins will confer honorary degrees upon Commencement speaker Joyce Brothers, George M.C. Fisher, Earl Kim, Ardath Harter Rodale and Baccalaureate speaker Phyllis Trible. Brothers, with 30 years of experience, is considered by many to be the dean of American psychologists. Well-known for her work on television and radio, her shows include Living Easy with Dr. Joyce Brothers and The Dr. Joyce Brothers Program. In addition, she is a regular columnist in Good Housekeeping magazine and writes a daily column that is published in more than 350 newspapers. She is the author of nine books which include The Successful Woman, Widowed, and How to Get Whatever Joyce Brothers You Want Out of Life. She is a member ofthe faculties of Hunter College and Columbia University in New York City. Brothers is a graduate of Cornell University and earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University. Fisher is recognized as one ofthe most admired executives in the electronics industry. Prior to Kodak, he served as chairman and chief executive of Motorola George Fisher Corporation, and worked in research and development at Bell Telephone Laboratories. He is on the board of Brown University, the University of Illinois Foundation, and the National Urban League. He has been active in U.S. and international trade issues through advisory groups to the U.S. Trade Representative and Secretary of Commerce. He is a fellow ofthe American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was elected to the National Academy of Engineers in 1994.
