Providing both need- based and merit scholarships will increase the pool of high quality applicants and allow Lehigh to continue to recruit excellent students. The availability of the merit scholarships will allow a number of high quality students whose families do not qualify for need- based financial aid to receive a partial scholarship. With the cost of a Lehigh education approaching $25,000 a year, many families regardless of their socioeconomic background are looking for assistance. With the establishment of merit scholarships, the university hopes to attract even more high quality students to the campus. "Lehigh has worked hard over the past few years to ensure access to the university to students of all economic backgrounds," said Pat Boig, admissions director. "Through our need-based program, we have been able to aid more than half of our incoming freshmen at 100 percent of their calculated need. We continue to be committed to need-based aid and will spend $26 million this year on our overall financial aid programs." Over the past four years Lehigh has met the full demonstrated need of 95 percent of those students who were offered admission through the regular and early decision programs and met the required deadline. "It has become increasing apparent to us, however, that there are many families who do not qualify for assistance as calculated through standard methodology, but who really need and deserve our help," said Boig. The new merit scholarship program will address this need. The merit scholarships will be implemented through three programs: Dean's Scholarships — Awards of $5,000-$7,000 per year . will be given to students who exhibit superior academic and leadership skills; Baker Scholarships for the Performing Arts — Awards of a minimum of $2,500 per year will be given to students of high academic quality who display a superior talent in music or theater; President's Scholars — Any student who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of 90 Lehigh credits, or who graduates with high honors, will be designated a President's Scholar, and will receive a full tuition scholarship for any Lehigh courses, graduate or undergraduate, taken within 12 months of graduation. Specific details about this program are still being formulated, and more information will be available later this semester.
