Pense has achieved one of the highest distinctions of the engineering profession — election to the National Academy of Engineering. Pense, a professor of materials science and engineering and former dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, becomes the sixth Lehigh member of the Academy. The others are President Peter Likins; John W. Fisher, the Joseph T. Stuart Professor of civil engineering and director of the Engineering Research Center For Advanced Technology For Large Structural Systems (ATLSS); LynnT. Beedle, University Distinguished Professor emeritus of civil engineering; Ronald S. Rivlin, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, and Arthur E. Humphrey, former provost. "This is the high point of my technical career," Pense said when he learned of his election. "But I don't know that I'm more worthy of this than anyone else."
