Photo by BRIAN RRICKER '94 Challenge Convention but Practice the Golden Rule Ted Turner Tells 1,137 Graduates Ted Turner, chairman of the board and president of Turner Broadcasting System Inc., urged graduates May 31 to practice the Golden Rule and challenge "current wisdom" in their fields. Turner, Time Magazine's 1991 Man of the Year, delivered his remarks at Lehigh's 124th annual commencement. A total of 1,137 students received bachelor's and graduate degrees from Lehigh's four colleges. "Don't accept the current wisdom in your field," Turner said. "Constantly question and challenge it. My father taught me that what the mind of man can conceive, the mind of man can achieve. You can go just as far as you want to. "To be successful," Turner continued, "you have to have a strong social life. Raising a family is the most important thing you'll do...The Golden Rule is the way to live. Treat other people the way you like to be treated. "It's not just the amount of money you make, it's how much of a contribution you make." Turner received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Cornel West, professor of religion and director of Afro-American Studies at Princeton University, delivered the baccalaureate address and received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. He told graduates there has been an erosion of society and families in this country and a "silent Depression" with a decline in real wages and cutbacks in social programs. , "Leadership makes a fundamental difference" when people feel powerless, he said. "Leadership is needed now to galvanize a world-weary people." He told the graduates tobelieve they can make a difference and transcend present-day leadership. Also receiving honorary degrees were Cathleen Black, president and CEO of Newspaper Association of America, Doctor of Humane Letters; John Diebold, R.E.
