Schmotter Appointed Dean of Business College James W. Schmotter, associate dean of the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, has been named dean of Lehigh's College of Business and Economics effective Nov. 1. His appointment was announced by Provost Alan W. Pense, who said, "All of us who have had the opportunity to meet Jim have been impressed with his experience, insights in business education and ability to work with people to develop and implement new programs. I am looking forward to having him join us in his new role at Lehigh." Schmotter will also be a professor of management. He joined the Johnson School in 1979 as assistant dean and became associate dean in 1984. His special interests are in the international dimensions of business and business history. Described in a 1992 Forbes article as "one dean not afraid to be candid," Schmotter has frequently commented on current trends in business education in articles in The Wall Street Journal, The Chronicle of Higher Education and other publications. He is the author of numerous other writings on professional education in the United States. Schmotter manages the Johnson School's external relations, publications, student services, admissions and financial aid. He has also developed an innovative academic program at Cornell that f-T combines the MBA with courses in Asian studies and the intensive study of the Japanese language. Since 1986,80 graduates of this program have accepted positions with U.S. and Japanese companies. He is executive editor of Cornell Enterprise, the Johnson School's award-winning alumni maga- James W. Schmotter zine, which he conceived and developed. He also coordinates the school's international programs and corporate relations, including managing student and faculty exchange programs with eight European business schools and relationships with major Japanese firms. When operational, the new dish will give the World View Room more access to live, foreign-language broadcasts of international TV programs. Russia's Horizont and France's Anik are two of the satellites from which the new dish can receive transmissions. The new system will complement the current satellite services. The broadcasts can be seen in the World View Room on the fourth floor ofMaginnes Hall. Four To Receive Honorary Degrees Founder's Day Lehigh will confer undergraduate and advanced degrees upon nearly 220 students at the University's 114th annual Founder's Day Ceremonies on Sunday, October 11. Alan W. Pense, University provost and academic vice "president, will give the principal address. Pres. Peter Likins will confer degrees upon seniors and graduate students who completed their degree requirements over the past summer. Four honorary degrees will be presented at the ceremony. Thomas H. Kean, former governor of New Jersey and president of Drew University, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Alice L. Eckardt, professor emerita of religion studies and distinguished scholar in Jewish and Christian studies, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. William L. Gladstone, retired co-chief executive of the accounting and consulting firm of Ernst and Young, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Maxine Frank Singer, president of Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C.and noted molecular biologist, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
