Malone Lehigh University Writer's Group Lehigh University's new Visitor Center at 314 East Fifth St., Bethlehem, was dedicated Thursday, September 1, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by members of the University, city representatives, and community residents. In cutting the ribbon, Joseph I. Goldstein, Lehigh's vice president for graduate studies and research, said the building is a place for visitors to call home. While living and working there campus visitors will get to know the community. James McCarthy, Jr., director of community development for the city of Bethlehem added the the guest house is a nice annex to the University. See Story Page 2 South Side Panel To Report Sept. 19 The Bethlehem Mayor's South Side Task Force will present its Phase I Report on Monday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Brougal Junior High School, Packer and Brodhead avenues. The task force's report will include results of a survey of those who live and work on the South Side, according to James W. Harper, director of community relations at Lehigh and a member of the task force. Lehigh employees were asked to participate in the survey earlier this summer. Out of about 1,000 surveys sent to Lehigh faculty and staff, more than 500 responses were received, according to Harper. "The Lehigh response has been almost unbelievable," he said. "The task force is charged with looking at major projects that could be developed in the South Side. The survey was a means of finding out what our basic needs are," Harper said. "In the next phase we'll focus on potential retail, social, and community projects." Members of the task force include include Harper, Nancy Adams Taylor, publisher of the Globe-Times, Tom Mohr. president of the South Side Merchants' Association, the Rev. Edward R. Dufresne, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and Peg VanDoren, chairperson of the Summit-Montclair-Carlton Block Club, and James McCarthy, Jr., director of community development for the city.
