His story is on Page O Lehigh Links 'Start-lips' To Big-Company Support By William Johnson Lehigh University Writer's Group Entrepreneurs wish they had the legal, marketing, patent information, accounting and other in-house services of a large corporation. On the other hand, corporate representatives long for the entrepreneur's freedom to innovate in an unstructured atmosphere with no distractions. Lehigh University has found a way to help entrepreneurs in eastern Pennsylvania get the big-company support they need, while exposing corporate managers to entrepreneurial approaches. It's called the Entrepreneur's RoundtabJe. It is designed to address "start-up" and "early-growth" problems encountered by young, technology-based firms by promoting detailed and highly focused discussions of these problems among qualified and experienced "resource people," most of whom come from large corporations. "Entrepreneurs often feel— and in fact are— all alone against the world," says Lehigh Professor Alden Bean. "But we have been able to link them with resource people who have been surprisingly willing to discuss problems faced by these small, technologically oriented new businesses." Bean is director of Lehigh's Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS), which is devoted to research on the technological innovation process. Bean explains that an entrepreneur first is referred to the roundtable by the Lehigh-based North East Tier Ben Franklin Partnership Program, which helps entrepreneurs in the region with technical and business issues. A core group of roundtable advisers listens to an entrepreneur's problem and then looks for corporate resource people who would be able to address the problem. The entrepreneurial firm, the Lehigh core group and the resource people receive a full description of the problem and roundtable agenda in advance so they can be prepared for the meeting. "Ground rules" for the meeting are explained to protect against disclosure of sensitive information.
