INSIDE SERMON IN STONE Packer Memorial Church An Historical Essay By W.ROSS YATES Bethlehem, Pennsylvania- FIRST CLASS MAIL U.S. Postage Paid Permit No. 230 Bethlehem, Pa. 18015 Issue Fourteen January 27,1988 Rod Rogers Dance Company Here Friday The Rod Rodgers Dance Company will present a multi-arts tribute celebrating the accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, January 29 at 8 p.m. in Broughal Middle School (Brodhead and Packer Aves.. Bethlehem). The program is part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration at Lehigh. Among the works to be performed will be "The Legacy," which was inspired by the dramatic true-life struggles and achievements of King and the music of Coleridge Taylor Perkinson. Created to celebrate the official designation of King's birthday as a national holiday, the piece features a series of dramatic vignettes exploring the life of King and the civil rights struggle of the 1960s. The first section, "Currents from the East,"was inspired by the idea of a philosophic bond between Ghandi and King where the "Spirit of the East" passes the mantle of nonviolence to the man from the west. This is followed by impressionistic portraits of Rosa Parks, freedom marchers, and a youth in jail, leading to the climax of an exuberant ballet to Perkinson's "Fredome! Freedom..." Rod Rodgers is dedicated to the creation and presentation of concert dance theatre, training in performing arts techniques, and arts programming as an educational vehicle. The Company is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary season. The program at Lehigh was made possible through the efforts of the LVAIC dance consortium and a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. The project is also supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. Admission for "The Legacy" is $6 for the general public. $5 for students and senior citizens, and $4 with a Lehigh ID card. Tickets are on sale in Bethlehem at the Lehigh Bookstore and Record City in Westgate Mall; in Allentown at Speedy's Record Shop; and in Easton at Utopia. For more information, call Lehigh's cultural affairs office at 215-758-4739. Bland Montenecourt Dies A memorial service was held yesterday in Packer Memorial Church for Dr. Bland S.
