clenching so vigor ously in the ithaca n.y gym that coach billy sheridan's 40th group of prodigies are prime choices to throttle perm state su premacy in the east when they meet jan 5 cornell's breakdown was over whelming for the big red 1950 eiwa third place winner be longed to an awesome triad with perm state and f&m and was sup posed to give lehigh a lot of trouble in its opening meet the visiting engineers early 10-3 lead woe swift and orderly before a fall in two minutes 21 seconds of the 167-pound bout by jack platt junior from mt pocono clinched the victory can point out the necessity of safe sane driving despite the fact that we can survive the high fatality rate of the season the traffic dangers on our own campus will once again present them selves upon our return while accidents have caused no serious injury or death as yet they re main a serious dollars and cents p:oblem — more than 2000 this semester we maintain that low cost improvements could reduce not only this loss but also the possibility of human life five reflector-type stop signs aie required the first at the corner of brodhead aye and the alumni building and the second at the entrance leading from sayre park to the lower campus see safety page 2 recessional . . . traditional and contemporary christmas music featured the ann ual lehigh-moravian vespers ser vice sunday afternoon in crowd ed packer chapel presented by the lehigh music department the program was highlighted by the chorus of mo ravian college for women di rected by marlin merrill and the lehigh glee club and orchestra directed by prof william h schempf during the processional and recessional each mem ber of the combined chorus carried one of the traditional moravian beeswax candles the congregation was greeted by dr martin d whitaker presi dent of lehigh and the opening prayer was offered by dr david e weinland president of mora vian college for women lehigh chaplain george m bean narrated the chris mas story as the choir sang traditional and old english carols and negro spi rituals major feature of the program was the playing of corelli's see vesper page 7 christmas holidays are a time for joy rather than tragedy smiles rather than tears life rather than death and yet our lives are in jeopardy now more than at any other time during the year more than one-tenth of last year's 36,000 traffic fatalities occurred during the month of decem ber when icy roads are overcrowded and many minds fogged by the spirit of celebration twen ty eight hundred of us will taking part in the season's festivities and all will thus be exposed to holiday driving hazards observance of the simple often-preached rules of careful motoring cannot insure a collision-free vacation but will cut down considerably the chances of accident statistics need not dampen holiday spirit if they snow storm brings 2 more lu smash-ups large audience enjoys excellent staging of rivals by paul bogardus snow causes many delays in wide area friday's snow storm which par alyzed the whole surrounding valley area also had its effect on lehigh instances of delays up to five and a half hours were com mon and instances of being stuck in the same spot for hours were not rare eddie cahn freshman star of the basketball team missed fri day night's game with haverford he couldn't even start the trip from his home in allentown the whole haverford team almost didn't get to grace hall either the team eventually left its bus on the hill-to-hill bridge and hiked up to the campus arriving one hour late because of the storm atten dance at the game and at the mustard and cheese produc tion of the rivals and the game of chess was very sparse only 44 hardy souls braved the storm to watch the m&c show friday night the show came close to being see snow page 3 two more accidents involving lehigh students occurred last fri day as a result of the snow storm four cars were involved in a series of collisions outside taylor gym according to fred schlicht mann c.e 52 the driver of the fourth car involved a 41 chev rolet owned by bob dannecker m.e 54 was parked in front of the gym entrance the three other cars in volved unable to stop in time because of the snow and unable to pass by be cause of a double-parked de livery truck blocking the road each hit his car's left front fender pete babcock m.e 54 driving a 35 ford was the first to hit the chevvy's fender and caused the see smash-up page 8 it'll be a blue christmas for all basic air science students at lehigh when the afpms&t gets finished outfitting its personnel in their new air force blues major jack emrick announced see allowance page 6 uniform allowance is upped for rotc an oscar to every member in the cast of the rivals award ed for maturity of presentation sincerity of expression depth of feeling and a wonderfully enjoy able production saturday night's presenta tion of the hilarious comedy must surely have marked a milestone in the career of the mustard and cheese players the impossibly confused rela tionships about which the play centered were played to perfec tion by a strong and forceful cast a near capacity audience re sponded to the ridiculous antics of mrs malaprop as well as the other characters with prolonged and spontaneous applause the individuality of each char acter was so well drawn and de fined that each would have been a success returned from an aiee meeting at 10:30 p.m only to find his room completely filled from floor to ceiling with crumpled newspapers members of the sec tion had spent an hour filling the room with the papers which they had been hoarding for more than a month kruse then agreed to join see paper page 7
