dramatic tryouts draw sixty men arcadia plans several innovations soccer artists entertain penn lehigh is primed for brown game vol xxx no 8 price five cents unusual smoker planned to-night dr richards and professor fogg address good crowd at first event of year will commandeer freshman to keep cheering sections clear in future football games record number of candidates features first call of the mustard and cheese society the first league game of the season is launched to-morrow at one o'clock the varsity squad with numer ous injuries will make every effort to snatch victory boxing wrestling and fencing bouts will feature season's . second football booster parade will follow brown is undefeated teams are even an all lehigh show the rhode island collegians have scored two wins and last week dead-locked syracuse at the last meeting of the arca dia it was ruled that ten living groups represented on the arcadia should send a freshman of that group to taylor field every satur day afternoon one hour before the football game for the purpose of keeping the cheering-section clear of any people other than students these freshmen will be under the guidance of the assistant managers of teams not in season it was also decided that the ar cadia should purchase a new le high flag and present it to the uni versity to replace the old and wea ther-beaten flag which is at present used for the campus flag-pole mr s l knipe c e 26 was excused from wearing a freshman cap because of extenuating circum stances metallurgists make short trip last tuesday evening the c e.s got together for their first meeting of the year dr richards was the first speaker and encouraged all the freshman c e.s to join the society and give it their support and told them of the big future in store for them each member of the depart ment then gave a short talk which was mostly for the benefit of the freshmen telling them how to pre pare their work and not to become overly worried about getting below grade in one or two subjects the first period professor fogg head of the c e department then gave a short talk telling the men of the fine ad vantages of the society the presi dent of the society then urged all the freshmen to join the society which would entitle them to be ju nior members of the american so ciety of civil engineers rev robinson to speak at y m c a bethlehem pastor will address sunday meeting on personal habits that help party of thirty men make one day visit to chrome n j metal refineries more trips planned good music promised last wednesday evening at 7:15 o'clock in drown hall the mustard and cheese dramatic association held its first tryouts for the musi cal comedy which is to be produced later in the year the prospects were extremely bright with ap proximately sixty men reporting from which lots of good material may be chosen every man has an equal chance and if there are any men who as yet have not signified their intentions of trying out for this musical production and do so desire kindly report either to pro fessor bartlett at the gymnasium on wednesday at 4 p m or hand in their names to b e rhoads at the delta tau delta house cuts will not be made until at least the third or fourth rehearsal the production is to be an all lehigh production for lehigh men about lehigh men written by lehigh men the music and lyrics arc being written by a group of un dergraduates and from all indica tions it is expected to meet with a most unusual success there will also be a chorus which shall have part in this show the selection of members for the cast and dancing chorus will be made from those men who show greatest proficiency and interest at the end of the third or fourth re hearsal another thing which men who are to try out for dancing parts must notice is that shoes suitable for this kind of work must be worn do not come in army shoes or shoes with heavy soles and heels watch the bulletin-boards in drown hall for notices and dates of the coming rehearsals continued on page four the y m c a has been very fortunate in securing rev james robinson pastor of the first pres byterian church of this city as the speaker for the regular meeting next sunday night he has chosen as his topic personal habits that help rev robinson is a prince ton graduate and a man who through his admirable personality has become very popular with all of the students who know him his former talks have been extremely interesting and instructive and the message he will bring on sunday promises to be no exception to the freshman will don pajamas for the evening several new speakers are listed get brown is the slogan for the second smoker of the year to be held to-night in taylor gymna sium more elaborate preparations have been made for this smoker and the booster committee is pre senting a varied program that should warrant the lower game floor being filled to capacity two boxing bouts have been ar ranged between fistic artists of the freshman and sophomore classes and eddie coxe last year's wrest ling team captain has unearthed a specialty bout that promises to evoke some laughter glenn and pease of the sophomore and freshman classes respectively will don the masks and cross swords for the set tling of the fencing supremacy of the lower classes a trio of pro fessionals has been secured to stage an exhibition of tumbling the lehigh six featuring cork o'keefe at the traps will interpret the latest dance music and accompany lehigh's famous mins trel johnny hinkel opdyke who will sing his own and original jane the arcadia will distrib ute sheets containing the lehigh songs and the band will be on hand to furnish the music there will be a big red-light p-rade after the smoker headed by the band and all freshmen are to appear at the smoker attired in pa jamas let's go a list of premier speakers has been secured to furnish the pep oratory and includes dr bill esty 05 ex-captain of lacrosse paul larkin 22 scrub-coach and ex-varsity end okey and fay bartlett who will cast aside his usual role of referee and open up dr richards honored poor interest shown in b & w competition varsity l club to be reorganized on saturday afternoon on the up per field the soccer ream will play its first regular league game of the season against pennsylvania the contest will be called at 1 : 00 p m sharp and it is the urgent request of manager asbury and captain mercur that the student body be present at this the initial game last year the perm team was vic torious and it is the earnest wish of all the old men that the lehigh eleven shall inflict a telling defeat in this year's conflict to this end coach carpenter has been drilling and training his men more rigor ously than usual during the past week as to the comparative strength of the two teams no conclusion can be reached for in the preliminary games neither squad has evidenced any amount of brilliant play to look for such manifestations so early in the season would be un fair however reports have it that pennsylvania was defeated by a local philadelphia eleven the prospects then are good and if the proper amount of confidence is at all a factor in winning lehigh should be able to settle the account held over from last year the lehigh soccer team through various practice games with the bethlehem steel team has develop ed in the past week a smooth and skilful aggregation well-balanced and thoroughly imbued with the idea of putting lehigh foremost among the soccer teams of the country owing to the high quality of the pennsylvania players and the high degree of soccer shown by the le high team last saturday the game should be a fine exhibition as the time of the game is 1 : 00 it will be possible for all students to see the first league game fernandez dr and mrs richards attended a reception in the evening given in their honor by professor frank o dufour of the lafayette faculty wednesday october 18th was founder's day at lafayette the exercises commenced at 11 o'clock in the morning with addresses by several prominent speakers among whom were dr richards our president count chambrus and mr flagle at 1 o'clock a degree of doctor of laws was conferred on these three men there was al so an election of some new mem bers to the board of trustees the grueling tussle with rutgers last saturday claimed as its toll five varsity players at lehigh hoff man who was carried out of the game is the recipient of a badly wrenched knee and miller who re placed him at guard is also com plaining with a bad knee it is feared that carlyle has a broken jaw dot mellinger is still laid up with internal injuries while lingle who sustained a fractured collar-bone will not be back in the game for at least three weeks le win was able to report on monday but it is likely that dutch hen schen will retain his position of calling signals it is further fear ed that cusick has again hurt his ankle these injuries with the excep tion of lingle's are in no sense serious and coach baldwin will be able to place his strongest team on the field on saturday next when brown university invades the lair of the brown and white coach baldwin as he stated in the first smoker has no alibi for the defeat at the hands of rutgers their line was far heavier than that of lehigh's and although the game looked like a 7 to 6 victory until the final quarter the terrific plung ing of the scarlet backs turned that victory into defeat when the brown and white line crumbled before their attack baldwin and with him the student body knows that he has the makings of a team and will do all in his power to turn in a victory over brown the bruins will come to bethle hem with what is characterized as the best team since 1916 the year in which both yale and harvard were defeated the collegians from providence are again predicting a season as successful and reports from their camp are filled with ac counts of how many points they will run up against lehigh continued on page four with a team composed of nine veterans from last year the only new men being schmultz left end and swaney right halfback the bruins opened the season with a 27 to 0 victory over rhode island state one week later colby col lege was handed a green persimmon notice on saturday morning october 14th thirty men connected with the metallurgy department started out on a tour of inspection at the uni ted states metal refinery the party was directed and under the charge of professors pulsifer and rausch who made the trip most interesting at 9:30 o'clock the men arrived in newark new jer sey and from there took a trolley to chrome the seat of the plant which has many diversified interests and was very instructive to the stu dents they were very cordially received and the plant was at their disposal for the rest of the day continued on page four the first important event was an address by a former lehigh man mr c e pyne 03 he is the general superintendent of the plant and told the men all about his in terest in the subject of metallurgy what a field it was for good able men and many other interesting things about its progress in the last half century after he had finish ed the party divided into two par ties and then began their rounds of the plant it is made up of many buildings such as the sampling house foundry zinc oxide recover ing plant tank house and the cast ing building the first of the build ings to be inspected was the foun dry where the party saw how the different metals were melted and then the casting house here was seen the method of working the notice there will be a meeting of all men who have won varsity letters in either major or minor sports at drown hall monday evening oc tober 23rd at 7:15 the purpose of this meeting is to re-organize the varsity club every man in col lege who has won a letter is urged to be present the letter men in college at the present time are : — football — lingle harper w springsteen storer carry last meeting of the competi tors for the brown and white edi torial staff was very poorly attend ed only a small percentage of the men who attended the first meeting were present last tuesday at 5 o'clock all meetings must be at tended by the competitors it is possible that last week the meeting of the candidates for the freshman wrestling team interfered but next tuesday all of the men who wish to continue in the competition should come to the brown and white room at 5 o'clock in comparison with former years only a small number have turned out for the competition the men will not be
