new-comers are probably un aware of the vast number of im provements which have changed the face of the campus during the summer months but old students will note with approval the near ly-completed gym the improved lighting the beginning of the new sigma phi house the reno vation of the first floor lounge in drown hall the new psychology lab the office and classroom changes in chrisfmas-saucon hall and the improvement of the prop erty arouond gus's hot dog shop to be built at the cost of 115 000 the new sigma phi house will be the first fraternity built on the campus since the construction of beta theta pi house in 1926 a mortgage of 55,000 has been ap proved by the board of trustees and a similar amount has been raised by alumni of the fraternity members will continue to contri bute toward the purchase of fur niture this fraternity which will house 26 students will be fireproofed with native stone up to the second floor and nique in addition mechanical devices have been installed to control the temperature of the air and water also housed within the new gym will be eight basketball courts fencing and boxing rooms and two special gyms equipped with exercising machines in ad dition there will be some 2300 lockers available for student use together with athletic dressing rooms for the wrestling enthusi asts the gym provides plenty of space in a room almost completely covered with grey plastic mats and con taining all the necessary equipment replacing the previously crowded administration facilities are well lighted offices and class rooms a trophy room completes the setting of the new home of le high athletics scheduled for completion oct 4 the taylor gymnasium annex costing approximately 885,000 will mark the end of another phase in the lehigh university progress fund recognized as one of the finest in the east the new swimming pool will be named in honor of the late myrl l jacobs vice president of the bethlehem steel company and a lehigh mining engineering graduate in 1910 at the same time the origi nal pool will be named in memory of peter j morrissey ' lehigh's late swimming coach and one-time president of the college swimming coaches : association of america measuring 75 feet by 42 feet and faced by a gallery seating 600 spectators the myrl l jacobs memorial pool will feature a nov el submarine window through which coaches will be able to spot flaws in swimming tech faced with redwood from there to the roof on the ground floor there will be a recreation room a chapter room trunk storage and util ity rooms and living quar ters for the housekeeper the second floor will have a liv ing room dining room li brary kitchen and coat rooms the third floor will be devoted to study rooms sleeping quarters and shower rooms at the south side of packer hall a concrete block wing is being built by the buildings and grounds department assisted by plumbing and electrical contrac tors this building will house the i.l pratt project to investigate nerve and muscle fatigue which will be under the direction of dr adelbert ford head of the psy chology department of special interest is the fact that the inter ior of the building will be com pletely isolated from outside in fluences such as light sound and temperature in order to carry out the experiments successfully in christmas-saucon hall approximately 4,000 has been spent in the regulations as they continue to park in zones re served for faculty members by saturday afternoon approxi mately 80 students were ticketed for illegal parking by university police and according to edward j farrell assistant superintendent of building and grounds the number is expected to increase until freshmen learn parking do's and don't's see map page 2 in explaining the rules and . regulations farrell referred the brown and white report er to the printed material giv en to all students at registra tion in accordance with uni versity policy students may not park their cars on the lower campus from 8 p.m to 4 p.m during days when classes are in session or ex aminations are being held except saturdays when the restriction is lifted at 12 noon the lower campus explained farell is the northern part of the campus bounded by packer aye on the north eighth st on the south taylor st on the east and brodhead aye on the west under no circumstances are stu dents allowed to park at any road turn or road intersection or on any of the main university drive ways no parking is permitted in double lines or on both sides of the road anywhere nor is parking permitted on the lower campus washington d.c the fresh man class also has representatives from canada china hawaii and venezuela so far the largest number of students entering by one name are those called smith thirty of the freshmen are broihers of lehigh students and ilumni while 30 are sons of alum ni three have mothers who af lended the lehigh graduate school by the time the freshmen regis tered on wednesday sept 20 up perclassmen had returned and completed their registration giv ing a total of 2,778 students en rolled for the fall term two new procedures were introduced in the registration procedure by j h wagner the new registrar the fresh men filled out their tickets and class cards as a group in advance and there were se parate checkers for each tick et since this new system seemed to work smoothly it is expected that it will be come permanent class totals as of saturday sept 23 put the class of 54 ahead with 790 enrolled there are 718 mem bers of the class of 53 667 in the class of 52 and 590 in the class of 51 also there are 13 members in the general college division in addition to the under graduate enrollment there are 118 listed in the adult ed ucation school and 290 in the graduate
