18 men participating in the manual of arms elimination the gold instructors medal was awarded to w e young bus 39 and the sil ver instructors medal to s n lewis m e 39 of three squads selected from each of the battalions the squad drill competition was won by the first squad of the third platoon of company b under corp l p elly e e 39 j u truslow i e 39 and j c rebert m e 39 both of company l were the first pair able to get their tent set up and equipment in order in the tent pitching contest the novelty contest of the after noon was the equipment race start ing at one end of the field the two men from each company shed right shoe cap necktie and left shoe as they dashed to the end of the field where pack equipment was laid out v s gray eng 40 company c and c f carrier i e 39 com pany g came in first and second the men were not kept in ranks for long periods this year and the band was even given folding chairs to sit upon while they relaxed and played a few numbers group will meet building committee to give annex contract maurice darling chairman of the national interfraternity council gave an informal talk at a buffet dinner held friday evening at the phi gamma delta fraternity house the two ranking officers from all the university fraternities were guests at the supper the supper was similar to one held last year by the phi gamma delta fraternity in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the lehigh chapter jack hoppock i e 38 said that the supper had been so successful that the fraternity would probably make it an annual event mr darling's informal talk dealt with the problems with which fra ternities are confronted and solu tions to these problems delta upsilon entertains parents on mother's day delta upsilon fraternity enter tained approximately 50 and prof and mrs stoughton the building committee of the board of trustees planned to meet today in the offices of the univer sity architects visscher and bur ley in new york city to award the contract for erection of the chem istry addition the committee has twice post poned awarding the contract due to the inability of the members to meet as scheduled the ground has been prepared for immediate work by the contractors and work will start as soon as one of the bids is accepted by the committee c d marshall is chairman of the committee a drive for subscriptions to the 1937-38 lehigh review was started today those who subscribe before the end of this semester will get a reduction of 25 cents this is the first time in the his tory of the review that a drive for circulation was fifty-two members of the class of 38 took the annual junior im promptu theme test recently of these 38 students successfully pass ed the test and 14 failed two jun iors were absent when the test was given the test is given to all arts men to check up on their writing ability over 500 delegates from high schools and preparatory schools of pennsylvania and new jersey at tended the fourth annual scholastic press conference held here satur day seven pennsylvania and three new jersey schools received first place awards in the contests held in connection with the meet the guest speaker was russ westover creator of tillie the toiler who stressed the impor tance of original and novel ideas in newspaper scoops he illustrated his lecture with drawings of his comic strip characters mac and tillie and also characterizations of dale h gramley associate profes sor of journalism and dr neil carothers dean of the college of business administration president c c williams gave the opening address to the gathering in which he welcomed the guests to the university following this dr carothers addressed the group re lating some of his experiences with newspapermen he also spoke on the cartoon phase of journalism newspapermen judge in addition to the first place win ners ten second place plaques and 39 certificates of merit were award ed the awards were announced by professor gramley judges for 111 bus 37 former captain of the organization presided over the pledging scabbard and blade pledges twice yearly taking in juniors and seniors in the fall and juniors in the spring recent elections of the organiza tion voted the following officers for next year m s lord ch e 38 captain r a dean i e 38 vice president m r collins m e 38 treasurer and l o travis bus 38 secretary the men pledged were edwin m bradway arts 38 allan c crane bus 38 milton c enstine i e 38 eugene c fleming bus 38 william d lucas ch e 38 mel vin r mesoroll i e 38 george l schiel met e 38 evans h stone bus 38 philip j welch m e 38 russell r winters bus 38 i came here expecting to find a superior organization said major charles c morgan infantry officer representative of the commanding general of the third corps area while watching the field competi tions preceding the final regimen tal parade and review and i don't believe that i shall go away disap pointed asked at the conclusion of the review if it could be said that he had not been disappointed major morgan laughed and said i have not been disappointed i'm very well pleased president c c williams stated major green is to be congratulat ed for having such a splendid unit in turn major j o green head of the military department said that he was very pleased with the work and thought that it was the best that he had ever seen he added that every one major george r hedge infantry officer and major milton b good year infantry officer the com panies representing the other two battalions in the competition were l and c headed by w c riedell ch e 37 and m l jackson eng phys 37 the first platoon of company f under the command of lieut r w vogelsberg m e 37 won the scabbard and blade cup and one streamer for its company guidon in the platoon drill competition pla toons representing the other two battalions were the first platoon of company c under lieut c b till son e m 37 and the first platoon of company x with lieut h s krauter ch e 37 out of 18 men participating in the manual of arms elimination the gold instructors medal was awarded to w e young bus 39 and the sil ver instructors medal to s n lewis m e 39 of three squads selected from each of the battalions the squad drill competition was won by the first squad of the third platoon of company b under corp l p elly e e 39 j u truslow i e 39 and j c rebert m e 39 both of company l were the first pair able to get their tent set up and equipment in order in the tent pitching contest the novelty contest of the after noon was the equipment race start ing at one end of the field the two men from each company shed right shoe cap necktie and left shoe as they dashed to the end of the field where pack equipment was laid out v s gray eng 40 company c and c f carrier i e 39 com pany g came in first and second the men were not kept in ranks for long periods this year and the band was even given folding chairs to sit upon while they relaxed and played a few numbers group will meet building committee to give annex contract maurice darling chairman of the national interfraternity council gave an informal talk at a buffet dinner held friday evening at the phi gamma delta fraternity house the two ranking officers from all the university fraternities were guests at the supper the supper was similar to one held last year by the phi gamma delta fraternity in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the lehigh chapter jack hoppock i e 38 said that the supper had been so successful that the fraternity would probably make it an annual event mr darling's informal talk dealt with the problems with which fra ternities are confronted and solu tions to these problems delta upsilon entertains parents on mother's day delta upsilon fraternity enter tained approximately 50 and prof and mrs stoughton the building committee of the board of trustees planned to meet today in the offices of the univer sity architects visscher and bur ley in new york city to award the contract for erection of the chem istry addition the committee has twice post poned awarding the contract due to the inability of the members to meet as scheduled the ground has been prepared for immediate work by the contractors and work will start as soon as one of the bids is accepted by the committee c d marshall is chairman of the committee a drive for subscriptions to the 1937-38 lehigh review was started today those who subscribe before the end of this semester will get a reduction of 25 cents this is the first time in the his tory of the review that a drive for circulation was started during the preceding semester the price of the review will be 1.50 regularly but for those subscribing before the end of this semester the price will be 1.25 next year the review will be mailed to subscribers instead of being delivered by student carriers plans are also being formed to have colored covers next year candidates for the position of as sistant circulation manager are sell flowers that bloom in the spring sullivan from mikado dedication franz sung by the double quar tet two russian folk songs fireflies and at father's door and the alma mater juniors take theme test fifty-two members of the class of 38 took the annual junior im promptu theme test recently of these 38 students successfully pass ed the test and 14 failed two jun iors were absent when the test was given the test is given to all arts men to check up on their writing ability over 500 delegates from high schools and preparatory schools of pennsylvania and new jersey at tended the fourth annual scholastic press conference held here satur day seven pennsylvania and three new jersey schools received first place awards in the contests held in connection with the meet the guest speaker was russ westover creator of tillie the toiler who stressed the impor tance of original and novel ideas in newspaper scoops he illustrated his lecture with drawings of his comic strip characters mac and tillie and also characterizations of dale h gramley associate profes sor of journalism and dr neil carothers dean of the college of business administration president c c williams gave the opening address to the gathering in which he welcomed the guests to the university following this dr carothers addressed the group re lating some of his experiences with newspapermen he also spoke on the cartoon phase of journalism newspapermen judge in addition to the first place win ners ten second place plaques and 39 certificates of merit were award ed the awards were announced by professor gramley judges for
