lehigh quintet to play at rutgers lehigh to meet columbia on mat rutgers natators next opponents vol xxix no 31 musical clubs to play at bishopthorpe presidents win basketball game price five cents excellent year book planned this year excellent program will be fol lowed by a dance for the members of the clubs scarlet five has good record so far with lafayette among her victims close and hard fought meet ex pected with strong new brunswick team strong new york team to wrestle here tomorrow night — a good match expected two goals in the closing min utes by visitors nose out le high five by 19-15 score some new features to be in cluded in annual to appear junior week very fast game team in good shape brown and white quintet kept on par with w & j outfit during most of game lehigh divers and plungers are improving while swimmers are making better time the next opponent lehigh faces on the mat is columbia university who will be the attraction to-mor row evening in taylor gym col umbia has chalked up two impor tant victories to date one over the army and the other last monday against university of pennsylvania the new yorkers best wrestler ap pears to be captain hart who per forms in the 145-lb class he had some difficulty with rabinowitz his perm opponent due more to the lat ter's unusual strength than to any lack of ability of hart hayman and schwartz in the 125-lb and 135-l.b classes respectively are al so experienced men which is unfor tunate as lehigh is weakest in these classes the final lehigh selection for the bouts to-morrow evening is uncertain in three classes job who wrestled 125 against perm state has been taken sick with the grippe and this leaves the choice between keenan drew and van kueren matthews who also wrestled last saturday is being challenged by gihon one of last year's regulars in the 175-lb class the selection lies among carlisle quick and miller continued on page kour freshmen to wrestle at blair academy the combined musical clubs will make their second appearance of the week at bishopthorpe manor to night the first part of the even ing will be devoted to the program rendered by the clubs following will be a dance given by the girls of bishopthorpe for the members of the clubs the entertainment is scheduled to begin at 8 o'clock and the dance will start immediately af ter its close lasting for an hour and a half or two hours a total of forty-five men will take part besides the selections render ed ensemble there will be several specialties the all-star trio consisting of clinton ide 22 guitar john opdyke 23 ukelele and bill lit tle 22 guitar will sing and play several catchy songs another combination which will be an important factor in the suc cess of the evening is the dizzy four a quartette composed of brumbaugh tait little and ide all of the senior class a vaudeville skit will be staged by lewis and opdyke they will introduce some of the latest south ern melodies besides these features there will be an hawaiian quartette the plaintiveness of this type of music will be brought out by morehouse playing the ukelele ide the steel guitar ; tait the mandolin ; and horine the guitar rutgers is enjoying one of her most successful basketball seasons this year among the scarlet's vic tims is lafayette the winners hav ing run up a large score on the ma roon and white early in the ( season lehigh meets one of the strongest collegiate basketball teams on sat urday evening when the brown and white dribblers line up against rut gers at new brunswick two of the most spectacular and sensational forwards in collegiate circles benzoni and boudinet do most of the scoring for the rutgers team these two men are always dangerous particularly under the basket where they are sure shots they have led the rutgers squad in scoring benzoni will be remembered for his spectacular work against lehigh last year in taylor gymnasium on this occasion the rutgers team lost although they outscored the brown and white team from the floor last year benzoni due to close guarding was unable to get under the basket from the middle of the floor he made four of the most beautiful clean shots ever witness ed in taylor gymnasium the lehigh team which will op pose rutgers on saturday will be in all probabilities the same as the line-up used by coach fisher against w and j last wednesday it is as follows : lingle and har per forwards ; lees at center ; springsteen and henschen guards new burr to be out next week captain van nort's tankmen hope to duplicate last saturday's victory when they take to the water to morrow afternoon at two o'clock in competition with rutgers . un der the watchful eye of coach lu kens a former rutgers natator the squad has shown marked improve ment during the week and the time trials the last two days give indica tion of some fast sprinting being witnessed in the tank to-morrow j childs and f s astarita have displayed exceptional form in the diving practices but will be pushed to the limit as the visitors from new brunswick will be represented by galbraith a former interschol astic champion duke davis has been on the sick list since the hopkins meet but he is expected to be in condi tion to park off with captain van nort in the 50-yard sprint and in the relay event along with jacobs and hannon the brown and white will probably be represented in the back-stroke event by van nort and jacobs the latter making his initial entry in this event un derwood and regad have been do ing good plunging and hope to an nex some points rutgers has a star in captain geibel who recently beat the anap olis champion sinclair in the 220 yard swim in the remarkable time of 2:26 the scarlet leader also does the 50-yard swim in 25 sec onds flat and is just as adept at the back-stroke the new brunswick collegians have a strong squad and one of the best meets of the season is expected ample accommodations are being made around the pool for the stu dent body the first event will be run off at two o'clock sharp frosh and sophs to clash in basketball movies at mining society meet tonight washington and jefferson nosed out lehigh in the final minutes of the basketball game played last wednesday night in taylor gym the contest was close and exciting from start to finish and was easily the best game lehigh has put up this year the final count was 19 to 15 w and j broke into an early lead when eaton caged a foul goal lees put lehigh into the lead a minute later however when he made a couple of foul tries good w and j again took the lead when eaton dropped in a 2-pointer only to have harper tie the score with a pretty shot from near mid floor the referee was calling numerous personal fouls as the teams battled under the baskets and ; both lees and eaton were making the shots count near half time walker put his team ahead with a neat field goal and the half ended with w and j on the long end of a 10 to 8 score continued on page four the intermission seemed to put new life into the brown and white players and from the start of the second half they completely out played the visitors lingle took a pass from lees and tied the score ; shot another basket from near mid floor and the crowd went wild when he took a pass from hen schen and scored his third goal meanwhile w and j was unable to advance the ball from the mid dle of the court due to the close guarding of the lehigh players henschen in particular played a splendid game being all over the court and taking the ball from the visitors on numerous occasions folil goals only were keeping the visitors in the running as they could not get near the basket near the 1923 epitome is now . well under way about one third of the book is now in the hands of the printers and it is the expectation by the board that it will be com pleted not later than march 1 in order that it may be off the press and in the hands of the students during junior week the sophomores who are out on the competition for business man ager of the 1924 epitome are now seeking subscriptions to the book the price of which will be five dol lars it is imperative that as many subscriptions as possible be secured so that the business manager will know approximately how many must be ordered the board contemplates having a very large and unique feature sec tion in the book and in order that it may do this it is necessary that the students supply many snapshots of the campus and student life wit ty sayings parodies on poetry and original sketches for the use of the board it is urged that as many of these as are available be turned over to the committee as soon as possible the chairman of the senior class book of the 1923 epitome has com pleted the final arrangements for the year-book and the entire copy is now in the hands of the printers this work is being done by the read-taylor company of balti more who have a wonderful repu tation for doing this kind of work the copy will be off the press by feb 18 and no more ballots can be received however an oppor tunity is given those who wish to submit snapshots of themselves to do so before monday february 20 any submitted later than this date cannot be used there are still about twenty-five men who have not paid their assessments of thir teen dollars it is necessary that these men do so before february 18 or their write-ups will be taken out of the proof payment can be made to any member of the com mittee or a check may be mailed to c p gooding at the delta tau delta fraternity or to the treas urer a r wingate jr at the theta delta chi house cyanide meets at wyandotte hotel the new issue of the burr prom ises to be a great success and is one of the kind that has been a factor in having the burr ranked as the third-best comic publication by the staff of judge the issue will be out next week and can be obtained at any of the stores or from the business manager the ensuing issue will be the flapper number all of the work in this number will be done by girls and it is hoped that the art and talent of the modern flapper will be a pleasing diversion to the readers there will be three prizes awarded for the best work submitted in the three lines — cover sketch and lit erary pieces the prizes for the winners are a gold burr charm and a year's subscription to the publica tion if any of our readers have fair friends versed in the manner isms of flappers urge them to try their efforts and submit their work for the flapper number sword and crescent to meet monday the freshman wrestling squad is hard at work in preparation for its meet to-morrcw at blair acad emy the men are showing up well in the try-outs but the squad is hampered by a lack of sufficient material for the light-weight class es it is hoped more of the frosh will come out for this sport be cause some very good meets have been arranged for them by manager saltzman in addition to the one with blair academy the meets now scheduled are : — allentown y m c a away february 25 brooklyn 1 poly tech march 11 u of p freshmen march 18 following is a summary of the try-outs that were run off for sat urday's meet : — 115-lb class - — bokum defeated levy by fall time 3 minutes 125-lb class — washburn defeat ed lang by fall time 7 minutes 20 seconds 135-lb class — behr defeated pitts by fall time 5 minutes 145-lb class — carr defeated weissenborn by fall time 7 minutes 15 seconds 158-lb class 1 walker de feated hay by fall time 2 min utes 20 seconds 2 burke de feated beck by fall time 6 min utes 58 seconds chi psi giving dance a meeting of the mining society will be held to-night in williams hall at 7 o'clock sharp the sub ject of discussion for the even ing will be rock drilling ; some pic tures taken by the u s bureau of mines will be shown and methods explained by skipper eckfeldt who will speak at this meeting this is the third meeting of the year and a full attendance is ex pected especially of all miners to whom these pictures will be of great importance h c beeckel who is president of the mining society urges a full representation as he wishes to comment on future meet ings and the work to be accomplish ed by the mining society in the re maining time of this year the members of chi psi are to give a private dance this saturday evening from 8:30 to 12 the mu sic for the dance will be furnished by the knickerbocker orchestra which is quite prominent in this vi cinity notice the freshman basketball team has promise of a very exciting series of three games with the sophomore quintet which will be played off in the near future in addition games have been arranged with allentown business college moravian prep and a second contest will be played with the lafayette freshmen who staged a 31 to 25 victory over the brown and white yearlings last saturday evening at easton more games are expected so that the frosh will finish their season at the same time as the varsity the freshmen have been show ing very good form lately consider ing the strength of their late oppo nents and they should finish their schedule with a clean string of vic tories the work of titus gil mour and roberts is especially to be recommended notice notice if there are any new clubs in le high which would like to have space in the 1923 epitome they should communicate immediately with a w hicks at the theta delta chi house the regular meeting of cyanide was held wednesday evening at the wyandotte hotel j m read 23 was elected to the office of secre tary-treasurer the subject of the student court-martials about which major lang has written to the ar cadia was brought up and discussed major lang wishes to institute a court martial system by which he intends to try cases of insubordi j nation and other offenses occurring in the department of military sci ence and tactics which are not un der the jurisdiction of the arcadia the punishments which he intends to impose are punishment tours or if the case is more severe the of fender will be dropped from the course no conclusions were reach ed by the club due to the fact that basketball games are being held on wednes day evenings cyanide meetings in the future will be held at 5:45 o'clock instead of 6 30 o'clock un til the basketball season is over any men belonging to fraterni ties not represented at lehigh will please notify j f conlin at the theta delta chi house as soon as possible drown hall probably scene of next show rehearsals for the devil's dis ciple the play which the mustard and cheese will present in march have been continued throughout his week the progress made has been such that the prospect of an early showing of the play is quite bright the different acts have been re hearsed under the capable direction of prof parke b fraim who has coached the men individually and collectively to round out the charac terizations and plot at a meeting of the mustard and cheese managing board last wed nesday afternoon it was decided that the proposition of staging the devil's disciple at the kurtz the atre was financially inexpedient and 1 this idea was therefore dropped the lehigh orpheum theatre was discussed and was thought to be too small and inattractive although the stage facilities are quite suitable arrangements are under way to find out if the show could be given at the grand opera house and un der what conditions after discussing the various possi bilities it seemed probable that the play would be presented in drown hall it is therefore thought that if the play is staged in drown hall there will be two performances these will be on a friday evening and saturday evening of the same week it is hoped in the early part of march the exact date of course will depend on the rapidity with which the rehearsals proceed the devil's disciple promises to be as great a success as the previous performances of the mustard and cheese a picture of the y m c a cabinet will be taken at mccaa's studio on saturday at 1 o'clock all members are urged to report promptly the sword and crescent society will hold its february meeting at the phi gamma delta house on monday evening february 20 at 6:45 o'clock the society will be entertained for dinner and will hold an informal meeting after the meal several topics of interest will be discussed and recommendations will be made by the society as to some remedy for existing conditions it is very probable the discussion of new men who must be elected in the next two months will be held it is urged that all of the members be on hand for this meeting brown and white bethlehem pa friday february 17 1922

some pic tures taken by the u s bureau of mines will be shown and methods explained by skipper eckfeldt who will speak at this meeting this is the third meeting of the year and a full attendance is ex pected especially of all miners to whom these pictures will be of great importance h c beeckel who is president of the mining society urges a full representation as he wishes to comment on future meet ings and the work to be accomplish ed by the mining society in the re maining time of this year the members of chi psi are to give a private dance this saturday evening from 8:30 to 12 the mu sic for the dance will be furnished by the knickerbocker orchestra which is quite prominent in this vi cinity notice the freshman basketball team has promise of a very exciting series of three games with the sophomore quintet which will be played off in the near future in addition games have been arranged with allentown business college moravian prep and a second contest will be played with the lafayette freshmen who staged a 31 to 25 victory over the brown and white yearlings last saturday evening at easton more games are expected so that the frosh will finish their season at the same time as the varsity the freshmen have been show ing very good form lately consider ing the strength of their late oppo nents and they should finish their schedule with a clean string of vic tories the work of titus gil mour and roberts is especially to be recommended notice notice if there are any new clubs in le high which would like to have space in the 1923 epitome they should communicate immediately with a w hicks at the theta delta chi house the regular meeting of cyanide was held wednesday evening at the wyandotte hotel j m read 23 was elected to the office of secre tary-treasurer the subject of the student court-martials about which major lang has written to the ar cadia was brought up and discussed major lang wishes to institute a court martial system by which he intends to try cases of insubordi j nation and other offenses occurring in the department of military sci ence and tactics which are not un der the jurisdiction of the arcadia the punishments which he intends to impose are punishment tours or if the case is more severe the of fender will be dropped from the course no conclusions were reach ed by the club due to the fact that basketball games are being held on wednes day evenings cyanide meetings in the future will be held at 5:45 o'clock instead of 6 30 o'clock un til the basketball season is over any men belonging to fraterni ties not represented at lehigh will please notify j f conlin at the theta delta chi house as soon as possible drown hall probably scene of next show rehearsals for the devil's dis ciple the play which the mustard and cheese will present in march have been continued throughout his week the progress made has been such that the prospect of an early showing of the play is quite bright the different acts have been re hearsed under the capable direction of prof parke b fraim who has coached the men individually and collectively to round out the charac terizations and plot at a meeting of the mustard and cheese managing board last wed nesday afternoon it was decided that the proposition of staging the devil's disciple at the kurtz the atre was financially inexpedient and 1 this idea was therefore dropped the lehigh orpheum theatre was discussed and was thought to be too small and inattractive although the stage facilities are quite suitable arrangements are under way to find out if the show could be given at the grand opera house and un der what conditions after discussing the various possi bilities it seemed probable that the play would be presented in drown hall it is therefore thought that if the play is staged in drown hall there will be two performances these will be on a friday evening and saturday evening of the same week it is hoped in the early part of march the exact date of course will depend on the rapidity with which the rehearsals proceed the devil's disciple promises to be as great a success as the previous performances of the mustard and cheese a picture of the y m c a cabinet will be taken at mccaa's studio on saturday at 1 o'clock all members are urged to report promptly the sword and crescent society will hold its february meeting at the phi gamma delta house on monday evening february 20 at 6:45 o'clock the society will be entertained for dinner and will hold an informal meeting after the meal several topics of interest will be discussed and recommendations will be made by the society as to some remedy for existing conditions it is very probable the discussion of new men who must be elected in the next two months will be held it is urged that all of the members be on hand for this meeting brown and white bethlehem pa friday february 17 1922 |
