stresses in models this week cyril d jensen assistant profes sor of civil engineering will finish his fests on models of steel brackets this week in fritz laboratory the work was done in three phases 1 by celluoid models which determined the lines of stress and an estimate of the stresses which should exist in the prototype this was done on the photoelastic ap paratus by means of polarized light 2 by an oversized prototype of steel to the linear scale of seven times the celluloid models for the purpose of measuring precisely the stresses in the web plate with hug genberger tensometers 3 by steel barckets to the linear scale of three times the size of the celluloid model for obtaining ultimate loads the work is being done to es tablish factors useful in the con struction of the brackets such as are used to transmit the load from crane rails to the columns this work will enable engineers to select the proper thickness of the web plate and the size of the welds tests checked with steel models • the physical properties of cellu loid are such that the stress should be about 1-10 that in steel further the ratio of moduli of elasticity is about 1:100 therefore the original determinations are made with the celluloid models and the results are correlated with tests on the steel models the celluloid models permit a study of the lines of stress the par ticular path of the resultant through the bracket and the point of maxi mum stress the research was begun by pro fessor jensen in september he ex pects to publish the results in jan uary metal society to award prize to junior in near future the american society for metals of which bradley stoughton direc tor of the curriculum in metallurgi cal engineering is the chairman will award a prize to a junior at le high stresses in models this week cyril d jensen assistant profes sor of civil engineering will finish his fests on models of steel brackets this week in fritz laboratory the work was done in three phases 1 by celluoid models which determined the lines of stress and an estimate of the stresses which should exist in the prototype this was done on the photoelastic ap paratus by means of polarized light 2 by an oversized prototype of steel to the linear scale of seven times the celluloid models for the purpose of measuring precisely the stresses in the web plate with hug genberger tensometers 3 by steel barckets to the linear scale of three times the size of the celluloid model for obtaining ultimate loads the work is being done to es tablish factors useful in the con struction of the brackets such as are used to transmit the load from crane rails to the columns this work will enable engineers to select the proper thickness of the web plate and the size of the welds tests checked with steel models • the physical properties of cellu loid are such that the stress should be about 1-10 that in steel further the ratio of moduli of elasticity is about 1:100 therefore the original determinations are made with the celluloid models and the results are correlated with tests on the steel models the celluloid models permit a study of the lines of stress the par ticular path of the resultant through the bracket and the point of maxi mum stress the research was begun by pro fessor jensen in september he ex pects to publish the results in jan uary metal society to award prize to
