- the brown and white - lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 112 no 28 friday february 4 2005 guitar lessons to be canceled by olivier lewis assistant news editor the music department has announced it plans to cancel acoustic guitar lessons for next semester we are in the process of evaluating all of our courses said nadine sine chair of music department it's a standardization process across the middle states we have to see if all of our courses are fulfilling what the mission of the department is and also what the standards of the department are the department's rationale for the suspension is the absence of acoustic guitars in the orchestras at lehigh and the lack of space in zoellner arts center traditionally lamberton has been the location for the courses but as preparation begins for the 24-hour diner there will difficulties in find ing new places to conduct the lessons unlike all the other pri vate lessons that we give the acoustic guitar lessons do not support directly our music ensembles sine said therefore it is not directly supporting the mission of the department neither acoustic guitar pro fessor plans to teach at lehigh next semester sine said if the classes were can celed it would not be the result of instructors actions issues of unprofessional conduct and internal disputes have appeared within the music department and specifi cally in regard to the two acoustic guitar professors last semester brett grigsby shortened the length of his personal lessons from the customary 45 minutes to 30 minutes in an e-mail to the brown and white grigsby wrote there were a couple of weeks last term because of my busy schedule and the fact that i was preparing for con certs upcoming i did curtail very few students lessons to 30 minutes in order to recuperate the lost time grigsby said he gave one-hour lessons to the concerned students at the end of the semester it is unknown if this was decided prior to the department's internal investigation sine confirmed this irregu lar procedure he explained he used a slightly different format she said when asked if this proce dure was acceptable and if it could continue sine said we agreed ... that what he was going to do was the 45 minute standard format the music department was not timely in responding to allegations of these alleged practices in an e-mail to the brown and white onjan 28 sine wrote there have been no complaints to my knowledge about the length of guitar les sons the investigation started at the end of november after a student's complaints olga jacoby the music department task committee to finalize diner by katie wilkes news writer the task force for alternative student options began finalizing plans for the new diner that is scheduled to open in lamberton hall by spring 2006 student senators kurt lesker 05 and rick longenecker 05 said students are currently voting on possible names for the diner last friday an e-mail was sent out linking to a polling site on survey monkey the site allows students to vote for their favorite name out of the following 24 b&w photo by amanda wright hour diner lu grill hawk's nest the spot and lehigh diner there is also an other option where students can fill in their own suggestions for a name i personally like the name the nest lesker said i think it is quite catchy kind of like the max from saved by the bell longenecker said the diner task force received a huge response when students were first asked for name suggestions last spring he said they received 1,000 e-mails lesker and longenecker lamberton hall will be the site of a new diner the hall which will offer a variety of snack foods will likely undergo construction this summer proposal to improve housing student senate moves to increase quality of off-campus options by evan sachs news writer student senate proposed a plan to begin incorporating off campus housing into the uni versity residential services pro gram in a meeting tuesday the senate along with the university and the chief housing inspector of bethlehem are seeking to establish a closer relationship between lehigh university and students choos ing to live off-campus the meeting was the first time the project has moved beyond the realm of just student senate and has been opened up to all students including the graduate student council said michael a weekly student senate executive board meeting when we were discussing a better way for stu dents to be contacted about the off-campus crime spree that occurred last semester fusco said in the coming weeks stu dents will begin to have access to the new off-campus section of the residential services web site this will include a guide for living off-campus plus resources and contact informa tion for students to utilize both the university and the city of bethlehem in future years students who are applying to lehigh may also have a physical office much like greek affairs or career services to aide them in their decision to move off cam pus as well as provide addition al resources to them once they move off fusco said one problem that often con cerns students is the nsk of hav ing bad landlords
