the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 112 no 27 tuesday february 1 2005 junior accused of statutory assault by kate mcloughlin and olivier lewis news editor assistant news editor a lehigh junior was charged on jan 21 with statuto ry sexual assault of a 14-year old girl william martin 111 06 was arrested on three additional charges including two counts of corruption of minors and one count of furnishing liquor or malt beverages to a minor martin was placed in a northampton county prison in easton pa he has since been released after posting 10 percent of his 10,000 bail on jan 24 accord ing to court records on jan 19 investigator david hoffman received the complaint from the 14-year-old seven months after the alleged felony she reported that around june 16 she met martin and went to his east fourth street apartment where he then provided her with approximately four half-cups of butterscotch liquor and two 12 ounce bottles of a drink she believed to be smirnoff liquor according to court records once she began to feel the effects of the alcohol the girl said she accompanied martin to his bedroom where she said the assault took place the girl is now about seven months pregnant and expects to give birth in mid-march when factoring in the gesta tion period the date of concep tion corresponds to the date of the alleged assault the girl reported she did not have any other sexual partners during the timeframe of the con ception according to court records at the time of the encounter martin was 20 years old under pennsylvania law it is a second-degree felony for a person to engage in sexual intercourse with an individual under 1 years old if that person is four or more years older if they are not mar ried for example it would not be a felony if a 15-year-old and a north side building destroyed in fire b&w photo by bj shepard a fire destroyed a building on the corner of main and broad streets in north bethlehem across the street from bethlehem brew works the building is adjacent to the historic sun inn which was not damaged gryphon carousel evaluates candidates by jocelyn raskin news writer students hoping to be gryphons for the 2005-2006 academic year were evaluated thursday and friday in the annual gryphon carousel the carousel had been rescheduled from the previ ous weekend and moved to the lower centennial quad and lounges due to the snow storm it usually takes place in the uc but we got shut down from the snow last week said sumona basu 05 a gryphon involved in the evaluation process there were ()(> returning gryphons which left 2a spots open to candidates jim beattie 07 another gryphon involved in the selection process said more than 60 people applied the potential gryphons task force changes get mixed reviews by molly wallace one year after the greek life task force report-recom mendations were approved by the board of trustees the rec ommendations are gaining support among some members of the greek system last semester there were issues in some of the fraternities regarding the cleanliness and maintenance of certain houses one of the key recommen dations of the greek life task force report is regular house maintenance and cleaning according to the report fraternities and sororities should face a weekly mainte nance inspection conducted by a third-party inspection team last semester three frater nities did not uphold proper living standards chi phi delta tau delta and kappa news writer alpha all failed the residential environment review and were placed on social probation because of social policy viola tions however ryan lovell one of the greek life coordinators believes the organizations are beginning to comply with the new regula tions they have been improv ing he said there has been a lot of effort with residential service but it is an ongoing process that will continue to be worked on different groups are finding new ways to get things done lovell said he is happy with the increase in student involvement the greek sys tem has been cooperative in making the necessary changes set forth by the task force report see gryphon page 3 see greek page 6 see martin page 6 wrestling head coach greg strobel leads team to glory see story page 16 sports 12-16 im basketball 12 eagles 13 men's basketball 16 dean of sports 16 caroline whitbeck dis cusses the ethics of research see story page 4 news 1-6 college briefs 2 police reports 3 world briefs 5 lehigh grads see more job offers as job mar ket gains strength see story page 7 business 7-9 pr field growing 7 graduate expenses 7 look who's investing 9 check the brown and white online for a recap of the women's basketball games bw.lehigh.edu quick fact budweiser beer is named after a town in the czech republic source www.amusingfacts.com
