the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first friday february 20 2004 vol 11l no 31 greek life proposals announced by michael fusco production manager online members of the adminis tration met monday with stu dent representatives to discuss the recommendations approved feb 6 by the board of trustees regarding strength ening greek life the group of student rep resentatives included the interfraternity council the panhellenic council and the student senate the 71-page greek life task force report which was sent to all students in an e mail from president gregory farrington outlines 42 points in which the greek system needs to be improved provost roland yoshida said the task force is attempt ing to have all of the improvements addressed by the next board of trustees meeting on june 6 joe sterrett executive direc tor of athletics and chair of the greek life task force said we believe as a task force that the best chance for greek life is to implement this collection of recommendations in order to better commu nicate the objectives of the recommendations sterrett has grouped them into six chapter areas vision governance housing social policy commu nication and accountability this report is about the greek system it will strength en the campus as a whole if implemented sterrett said some of the more sweeping changes in the report include moving fraternity rush to spring semester and increasing the uni versity's role as landlord to the greek houses the report states that it will be mandatory for all undergraduates to live on campus their first two years a 90 percent occupancy rate will be required in all greek hous ing the administration plans to implement many of the policy changes this semester includ ing the hiring of new staff members called coaches to aid greek leadership and a pilot program for a reformed residential environment report rer system that focuses on greater accounta bility of all greek members the task force's findings come after a process that began three years ago the university has allocated approximately 15 million to the new budget in order to make sure these long awaited recommendations are imple mented the board of trustees sup port the plan in spirit process and principle said vice provost for student affairs john ui rich center eludes student interest by john misinco managing editor tara frank assistant dean of students for student life has seen her share of college and university student centers after attending and working at six schools including rutgers emory and shippensburg univer sities frank knows that the ulrich student center at lehigh does not live up to the competition when i was at shippensburg we went to the student center to hang out and talk she said you can't always do that at ulrich the 2.3 million ulrich center was opened in the fall of 1994 for just that reason - to provide stu dents with the central gathering space that was so desperately needed at lehigh ten years later both students and administrators agree that ulrich has not lived up to its intended purpose while colleges and universities nationwide have invested millions of dollars to ren ovate and build new student cen ters during the past decade ulrich has languished it's kind of waxed and waned over the years said john smeaton vice provost for student affairs there's still a fairly high amount of traffic but as we look toward the future we want to look for more opportunities big plans when the ulrich center opened expectations were high perhaps the most important and most utilized facility at ulrich was a new post office and student mail boxes the post offices and mail boxes had been located at the university center but due to a lack of space students were forced to share mailboxes original plans for ulrich called for a new york-style deli a con venience store in the mold of 7 eleven and a fast food franchise such as dunkin donuts tcby baskin-robbins or taco bell the deli came in the form of b&w photo by andrew figliozzi the post office and student mailboxes remain one of the few ven ues at the ulrich student center that regularly attracts students new art exhibit celebrates culture by steven munoz display featuring student artwork commemorates black history month news writer a new art exhibit examin ing the african-american experience is on display in the girdler gallery on the first floor of the university center the exhibit opened feb 16 a formal reception was held at 7 p.m sponsored by the student center facilities and opera tions office and the office of multicultural affairs the exhibit idealism in the dark portrays what the artists feel is the meaning of being black the display features the artwork of african-american students and a timeline that displays important events in african-american history from 1868 to 2004 what we're trying to do is create our own timeline of african american contribu tions to the american fabric said stephen coggs assistant dean of students for multi cultural affairs coggs said that the exhibit was put together as part of his office's effort to expand lehigh's celebration of black history month the exhibit displays the artwork of quinn allen,'o6 and howard ward,'o6 ward an art major and for mer football player said that his art represents his personal experiences and emotions about life he hopes that his artwork communicates his feelings you can see a lot of her itage in my artwork -
