the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 32 tuesday february 26 2002 all the lehigh news first sexual manipulation focus of play by amanda gontarz and sarah goldman editor in chief contributing editor a sexual tale of manipulation gender and social structure august strindberg's miss julie embod ies all while invoking strong emotions within the audience actors susan liu 05 and robert riley 02 lead the tale of a count's spoiled daughter and a scheming servant caught up in a twisted story of love sex and the ambitions and desires to be what they are not written by swedish playwright strindberg in 1888 miss julie tackled issues still prevalent such as the aftermath of sex and women's rights while discussing issues of the past the consequences of challenging the social paradigm liu portrayed the 25-year-old julie tormented by family secrets and betrayals tempted by the estate's servant jean riley and his ability to take her away from the life she knows jean and julie tease audiences with their oscil b&wphoto by autumn cruz susan liu 05 and rob riley 02 perform a scene from miss julie during dress rehearsal wednesday the play runs through thursday in zoellner arts center new web site launched for trial run by amanda macmillan assistant news editor the university's web site will soon receive a complete overhaul in the form of a new design and the addition of a campus portal students faculty and staff can preview the web site at www3.lehigh.edu the preview phase is designed to gather feedback from the com munity before the final version is launched in mid march the new site will be geared more toward external visitors it incorpo rates the new university logo new headings graphics and photographs while keeping many of the same main links and subheadings for many prospective stu dents and their parents the web provides the first snapshot look at lehigh so we need to leave an impression that's visually power ful and memorable steve oblas the director of university relations internet services said oblas said the top layers of almost every area of the site have been redesigned he cautioned however that visitors to the site may encounter problems such as disabled links or links to old pages it's important to recognize that the site is not a finished product — it's a work in progress as we migrate more than 2,000 pages of content to a new system with new navigation oblas said along with the existing fea tures of the web site new sections include a photo gallery audio and video clips university folklore and unofficial history users will also be able to send virtual lehigh postcards to family and friends major improvements are also being made to the alumni site which will soon give alumni the option to have customized web content sent to them via e-mail they will also be able to partici pate in polls and surveys view photos from events and join on line forums with their former classmates almost any web browser is com patible with some level of the new site although version 4 or higher of netscape navigator or microsoft internet explorer is needed to expe rience all of the new technologies the preview period for the web site began friday and feedback will be gathered through the first week of march comments can be sent to webpreview@lehigh.edu the homepage for students faculty and staff will not be affect ed except for small cosmetic changes in color and style in order to provide more online services that are not accommodat ed by the existing site a new campus portal will be tested in july the portal includes a variety of software applications to provide information such as academic resources administrative services and community information the portal will provide users with different types of information based on their specific role at the university - student faculty or staff and their personal preferences campus pipeline will provide the portal software the company is partnered with sct which dis tributes the banner system used on campus university relations will also provide standard web page tem plate to departments that build and manage independent web sites vagina monologues to open tonight by mia yantis news writer thirty-eight women will bring the experiences of females world wide to life in tonight's production of the vagina monologues eve ensler's obie award winning play will be performed by an all female cast of students faculty and staff the perfor mance based on interviews with hundreds of different women openly addresses many female issues that are considered taboo kristin handler director of the women's center said the play will be even bigger than last year's per formance it is an amazing way to raise awareness about women's issues handler said but it is also funny handler said the play is the cen terpiece of the v-day effort on campus and helps bring people together it's our community people we know presenting these women's issues she said thirty-eight women are performing in the play and they all bring their friends and it just explodes this way v-day is a worldwide move ment to stop violence against women and girls the organization helps grassroots national and world organizations continue their efforts to end rape abuse incest female genital mutilation and sexual slavery as a non-profit organization v-day donates 85 percent of all funds raised to the appropriate groups donations come from individuals corporations foun dations industries and products as well as benefit and commer cial performances of the vagina monologues donations are projected to exceed 4 million for the 2002 year v-day usually falls around valentine's day and the v stands for victory valentine and vagina v-day's website www.vday.org offers links to national and local organizations for women suffer ing from a variety of problems the organization also sponsors events such as the international stop rape contest rape free zone campaign and stand up with v-day alex kokura 04 said she is excited about her role in the play see vagina page 4 see julie page 4 pqhij wrestlers crush north carolina state on senior day see page 16 sports 13-16 women's lacrosse 15 men's lacrosse 16 women in business collect clothes for charity see page 3 news 1-4 college news briefs 2 whom to trust on wall street see page 7 business 7-9 business briefs 7 look who's investing 8 quick zip code 12345 is assigned to general electric in schenectady n.y source:http://www.uselessfacts.net
