bethlehem pa friday november 7 1919 cross country and soccer meet state cotillion club elects members seats now on sale for lafayette game varsity tackles state tomorrow price five cents band fund falling short of expectations large enrollment in r.o.t.c unit vol xxvii no 13 receipts to date far below the amount needed cheering section seats to be sold on november 12 squads to journey with football team additional features week a formidable foe team which beat u of p last first dance to be on dec 5 committees appointed over three hundred unit in country believed to be largest volunteer game at state college in this week requisition for uniforms to go complete revenge keady's squad is ready for a students desiring seats in the cheering section for the lehigh lafayette game to be played on taylor field november 22 may obtain them by presenting their registration cards and one dollar at the office in the taylor gym nasium on wednesday november 12 when the cheering section seats will be given out if a student does not wish to occupy a seat in the cheering section no rebate will be given for seats elsewhere but the full price of two dollars must be paid continued on third page students may get seats outside the cheering section by filling out application blanks at the office in the gymnasium money or checks must accompany the application blanks the demand for tickets has become so great that it is neces sary to limit each student to four seats in the first allotment stu dents desiring additional seats may make application on the same blank to the limit of four extra seats these additional seats will be given out after the first allotment all applications must be in by novem a meeting of the 1922 sopho more cotillion club was held in drown hall wednesday evening the following men of the class of 1922 were elected brewer g ewing hurtado hull israel jef ferson r w lee a michel saltz nian and switz the following six honorary mem bers were elected : j hiestand j hess d maraspin o'hearn rote and walker the club decided to hold the first dance friday evening decem ber 5 after the meeting the pro gram committee met to select pro grams the following committees were appointed : music : zantzinger chairman vilotte bates dance strauch chairman beatty hast ings niekamp stanton refresh ments : badham chairman mer eur e wilson craig cornelius patrons : jacobs chairman berg doll gooding morgan p larkin advisory g childs chairman burgess rheinfrank the money now being collected for the band fund is not coming in as fast as it should tire band has already proven itself to be the strongest in years and by all means is should be backed to the limit about 270 has been collected to date from only about ten of the living groups this is a poor show ing and all groups are urged to get busy as the money is needed im mediately six instruments have been order ed already which will cost 300 also there is music to buy and more instruments are needed those ordered will be here for the lafa yette game according to w n lawrie there will be no special uniforms made for the band but they will continue to wear white trousers brown sweaters and white hats anyone still wishing to join the band may do so and those having instruments of their own are urged to report immediately everyone on the band at present should re port for every practice of late the number absent has been too large besides playing perm state in football tomorrow lehigh will also battle with the up-state school in soccer and cross country these two aggregations will journey to state with the gridiron men the cross country squad put up an excellent exhibition last satur day at new brunswick when they defeated rutgers fast team to the tune of 40-15 points their bril liant exhibition in a drizzling rain on a four and one-half mile course was a credit to the school and a similar victory tomorrow is a safe bet the time of carr merkel and laughton was good in last satur day's contest and it is hoped that they will be able to equal if not pass it tomorrow the lehigh soccer team enters their first intercollegiate game along with the other lehigh-state contests the team has played two games in the blue mountain league so far winning one and losing the other the cross country season for perm state opened last saturday when state lost to perm at phila seats combine in wholesale buying spagna lehigh left guard whose stellar defensive work in pitt game was very evident wysocki lehigh full back whose consistent line plunging helped much to hold off the panthers trains for penn state mustard and cheese utjipma 21 u 20 i elm o xx ie tl'as a strong team with several veterans in the line-up trials are being held this week and the following men will probably compete with lehigh shields romig kabley orr snyder and foster the perm state course is five and one-half miles in length the run will finish between the halves of the football game in reference to soccer it does not leave until 8 50 a.m for bellefonte arriving at bellefonte at 10:15 a.m the trip from bellefonte t perm state will be made by automobile for a nomi nal price of fifty cents students notice military training has proved to be one of the most popular courses at lehigh the enrollment up to wednesday reaching 312 or about one third the total enrollment of the university this is believed to be the largest volunteer r 0 t c unit in the country with the student officers and non-coms ap pointed the work has progressed rapidly and the companies have already shown considerable pro ficiency at drill since the receipt of the letter from the commandant of the fourth naval district which was published in last tuesday's brown and white it has been possible to enroll members of the naval re serve on the condition that they re quest their discharge from the navy at present there are seven teen students taking training with the o-.t.-.c lygt vhft 3 3nck the law cap pit ir tiie an it h . cause they are members of the re serve of some branch of the service or because they are not american citizens the requisition for uniforms will be sent into headquarters this week after getting all the measurements it was necessary for the supply sergeant to go over the entire list and pick out the num ber of articles wanted of each size this is a task w t hich has taken a great amount of time the total value of this equipment which is to be ordered is in the neighborhood of 30,000 although the drill is held at one time for all members of the unit the time being wednesday from 3 to 4 it is of course impossible to hold the other two hours of lec tures at stated periods for all mem bers this is because every class and course in college is represented in the r o t c and it would be obviously impossible to find two free periods a week for them to use as the two lecture periods the total enrollment is therefore split into many smaller groups to whom colonel lang gives the first lecture of the week on monday tuesday or wednesday according to the period arranged and the second lecture is given on the three last days of the week provision has been made for rainy wednesdays since the men are not yet equipped with uniforms or overcoats and when such days occur and it is impossible to drill a lecture is given to the whole group the first quiz on the work covered to date was given this week and colonel lang reports that the marks were for the most part very high the subjects covered so far in the lectures have related mainly to drill and formations the next topic will be scouting and patrol ling its importance best methods of concealment and the like this division of military science is as is seen in the late war of vital im portance to troops engaging in battle and should be of interest to the students instructor bartlett of physi cal education is going to organize a fencing club he thinks that the men in the university should pay some attention to skilled arts in the training of the body and plans are rapidly being completed for various new forms of exercise the instruction intended in this class will cover all classes of the fencing art such as broad-sword foil and bayonet fencing the in tention at present is to make it more or less of an athletic social club its membership not being compulsory and only a number that can be efficiently taught being admitted continued on fourth page there are numerous men in col lege who are well drilled in the art and who are desirous of going on with this invigorating exercise it is the intention of the mus tard and cheese club to make this year's production an all-lehigh one that i it will endeavor to produce a play preferably of the musical comedy type the libretto and music of which will be written by members of the student body any man in college who is talented in either playwriting or in com posing music should consult either e w estes 20 president or r l wilson 21 manager of the club setback at the hands of glenn warner s panthers the brown and white gridiron warriors have put in a full week of stiff practice and are all set for the contest with perm state to morrow the squad composed of thirty men left for state at 8:30 this morning accompanied by the soc cer and cross country teams they will stay at belief onte all night and leave by machines on saturday morning to reach their destination a large number of students and local supporters will follow the team to state in machines as the plans for running a special train fell through on account of lack of support many past week has been ideal for football and coach keady with the help of assistant coaches murphy costello j keady and d maginnes have spent most of the time available for practice in bolstering up the weak spots which were noticeable in the pitt contest several new shifts and plays have been perfected and the forward pass which proved so effective against the panthers will in all probability be used to a great extent the injured list is slowly de creasing in numbers and henzel man who has been out since the new york aggie game is again out for practice and may play part of tomorrow's contest but as his elbow is still in a weakened condi tion it is not likely that keady will use him unless it is absolutely necessary douglas is still unable to use his ankle for running and his loss will be keenly felt capt mac donald also may not get into the battle as he is still troubled with a bad ankle continued on third pages perm state has an exceedingly strong combination this season and created considerable press comment by defeating pennsylvania last saturday coach bezdek has a wealth of good material this year and his team is composed almost entirely of veterans for the brown and white to score a victory over state would mean that the sting of last week's defeat would be entirely wiped out and will again place them among the east's leading college elevens the blue and white has an exceedingly fast backfield and wey and hess will probably be the most dangerous men in this department the former being a clever open field runner and the latter does most of the kicking larkin and wilson will be opposed by huggins and brown at ends and judging from the per formance of the lehigh pair in games so far this season they will give a good account of themselves the brown and white line though slightly outweighed by that of state is far from being outclassed by them and can be counted on to for the past two weeks the inter fraternity steward s association has been busy organizing and form ing the constitution that is now in the hands of all the fraternities in lehigh all the fraternities have heard the constitution and to date the following have ratified it as it now stands : phi delta theta delta phi sigma phi epsilon phi sigma kappa chi phi pi lambda phi delta tau delta theta xi beta theta pi kappa sigma on november 3 the following officers were elected for the coming year : f v wilson jr president treasurer a a gross vice-presi dent and eduardo gonzalez secre tary the object of the association is to reduce the high cost of living among the fraternities by whole sale buying there will be con siderable competition among the large wholesale houses in the country for it means a large order for them if all the fraternities enter the association and through this competition the cost will be con siderably reduced it has been estimated that from 200 to 250 will be saved by each fraternity in one year all orders of the fraternities must be in the hands of the presi dent treasurer on the first and third thursday of each month ac companing all orders there must be a cash payment of 25 and the balance must be paid on the re ceipt of the goods the dues are 3.00 for the year and is to be paid one month after the ratification of the constitution by the fraternity for additional members who ratify the constitu tion at a later date there will be a charge of 5.00 made it is desirable that all fratern ities that have their own table en ter into the association for the more members the lower the ultimate cost will be the dues and fines will be
