panhellenic council is voting wednesday to decide if the national panhellenic council's alcohol-free social initiative which prohibits sororities from co-spon soring events at fraternity houses unless the events are alcohol-free should be enacted at lehigh panhel members have pre sented the initiative to each of the sorority houses each indi vidual sorority voted on the ini tiative this weekend and the house presidents will vote at the panhel meeting according to their chapter's decision the ini tiative needs the affirmative vote of seven of the nine houses to pass panhel president katie schenderlein fifth-year senior said the initiative doesn't change any rules that most of the chap ters have it's really no different than any of the chapters national policies schenderlein said women are just being more accountable in terms of panhel according to maureen sheridan head of fraternity and sorority affairs the general mis conception has been that this initiative was put in place in an attempt to make the campus dry sheridan emphasized schenderlein's point that the resolution does not introduce any restrictions that were not already enforced by individual sorority chapters furthermore the restriction is only on the co-sponsoring of alcoholic events held at fraterni ty houses this is an attempt to make fraternity houses safer living and entertaining environ ments sheridan said sororities are still permitted to have off campus alcoholic events schenderlein said the initiative was introduced by the national panhellenic council in 1998 the general provision of the initiative is that fraternity facilities should slowly rise to meet the standards and regulations already enforced on sororities this movement is not an undertaking of lehigh or project impact but rather generated by the offices of local and national panhel councils who are separate from the university in the fall of 2000 lehigh's panhel voted against adopting the resolution schenderlein said that although many large universities around the country embraced the initiative the council felt at the time that lehigh's unique greek system would be negatively affected by the rules schenderlein said that several alcohol problems in the spring and increased pressure from the chapters national offices led panhel to change its mind and decide to adopt the policy it's an acknowledgement that we want people to be responsible she said assistant dean of students michael carey said the initiative should help the greek system everyone thinks that the systems are going dry but the intention of the policy is to keep students safe when you talk brotherhood and sisterhood you should talk about safety he said carey previously worked at villanova university where the initiative was successfully enforced a few years ago bring ing many positive changes he said sheridan said the initiative is a good opportunity for greek women to speak out on the issue of drinking on campus roughly 43 percent of women on campus are greek if they want to stand together on an issue now is their chance because they can be a pretty loud voice said sheridan jen ryan president of alpha phi sorority said i'm not sure that this is going to solve any of the university's problems with alcohol - lehigh students are famous for coming up with loop holes i think that in theory taking steps to ensure more safety
