FullText | the brown and white vol 108 no 23 friday december 8 2000 all the lehigh news first pasqua warns against risky behavior by amanda macmillan news writer elaine pasqua spoke about the loss of two parents to aids and the dangers of high-risk behavior tuesday in packard auditorium her program living and loving in a world of aids used audience interac tion humor and real-life stories to enter tain and educate students about aids and the dangers of unsafe sex alcohol abuse and sharing needles while attempting to erase some of the prejudice that exists toward the disease and its victims pasqua began her program by telling the audience that she became an aids activist after her mother and stepfather discovered in 1989 they had contracted the hiv virus once you live through something that horrible you don't want anyone else to have to live through it too pasqua said although her stepfather had contract ed the virus from a blood plasma trans plant in 1979 pasqua's parents felt they could not tell anyone they had the disease because of the stigma associated with having aids pasqua passed around pictures of her parents to show the faces behind the disease and emphasize that by looking at the elderly couple in the pictures it would be impossible to tell that they had aids pasqua detailed the pain of not only dying from aids but watching loved ones succumb to the disease as well her mother cared for her stepfather during the last years of his life when he was too weak to take care for himself she is my hero pasqua said she watched as he lost his vision his ability to walk his dignity and his independence knowing that it would soon happen to her nancy cerami an assistant at the health and wellness center thought pasqua's story of her family's struggle made her speech especially effective i found her message to be quite unique from the other hiv/aids speak ers that we have brought to lehigh cerami said she asks not for pity but has used her experience to make others aware that this disease is not going away and could take the life of not only your self but someone you care about and love very much after telling her personal story pasqua used the audience as visual tools to show the true danger of aids the first exercise used eight volun teers from the audience they played characters and read fictional stories about their sexual history one character was diagnosed with hiv which showed how sexual relations with one person can be affected by the chain of people that they've been involved with the entire audience participated in the second experiment by taking small b&w photo by undseyfuchs cups of either water or sodium hydrox ide another clear liquid according to pasqua the average student will have three sexual partners while in college so elaine pasqua helps a student during an experiment demonstrating the spread of the hiv virus one of two audience-participation activities during her speech art exhibit premieres by katy dyer news writer b&wphoto by amanda strickler a new art exhibit entitled four outsider artists the end is a new beginning opened last friday at zoellner arts center co-curated by ricardo viera director of lehigh's art galleries and norman girardot professor of religious studies the exhibit features works of four interna tionally acclaimed outsider artists mr imagination lonnie holley norbert kox and charlie lucas the outsider art is meant to mark the coming of the new millennium and includes creations that are both two and three-dimensional the works at the exhibit are made mostly of recycled materials and garbage including bottle caps old books and scraps of metal artifacts of biblical and shamanistic allu sions popular culture and history also helped to convey the spirit of the pieces kristina aji 04 was surprised by the art i never knew that something so pretty could be made out of something i threw away aji said it really conveys a positive message girardot played a major role in the opening of this exhibit by encouraging his students to help with the event this art brings life and joy to those who see it girardot said it is not just art that you look at on a wall he said he was especially pleased with how this project engaged not only the artists but also the students and faculty of lehigh and the local bethlehem commu nity girardot said school children from south bethlehem worked with the artists and helped catalog the art michael zurat 04 was impressed with what the artists had created it is really very interesting and not what i thought it would be the outsider artists exhibit will be open to the public until feb 25 the outsider art exhibit at zoellner arts center features the work of four artists who made their creations from garbage and
