the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 41 tuesday april 8 2008 all the lehigh news first off-campus attacks prompt increased police presence by lauren martiello three lehigh students have re ported attempted robberies on east fifth street in the past week police said in three separate incidents the students report being attacked by teenagers between 15 and 18 years old detective mark diluzio of the bethlehem police said they are cur rently investigating if the events were all related the first assault was at 11:30 p.m monday march 31 when a group of young males assaulted then at tempted to rob a 22-year-old lehigh student police said the student was able to pick up his backpack and run away at approximately 11:40 p.m wednesday april 2 three male sus pects attempted to rob a 21-year-old lehigh student on the corner of east fifth and taylor street according to a safety bulletin from lehigh chief of police edward shupp the student escaped uninjured by calling for help to other people in the area after which the three suspects fled at approximately 8:30 p.m thurs day april 3 a 21-year-old lehigh stu dent was hit on the side of the head by one of seven suspects knocking him to the ground according to a b&w photo by christopher chew second safety bulletin from shupp the suspects then tried to take the student's bag but he was able to run away to his home after which the suspects ran north toward fourth street the suspects in all three attacks were described as wearing black or dark-hooded sweatshirts and were hispanic or black according to po lice reports the victim of the second attack a senior male student who lives near e fifth street said he was assaulted as he walked home from fairchild mar tindale library wednesday night east fifth street is a popular location for students looking to move off campus the intersection of east fifth and taylor streets one block from campus was the site of three attacks last week dean compares bush and nixon criticizes politics by ben rautenberg john dean white house counsel to former president richard nixon is known for his voice and testimony during the watergate scandal and on thursday in baker hall he voiced his opinion on other matters - current political affairs dean's speech executive power from nixon to bush ... and beyond was this year's tresolini lecture an endowed lecture series fo cusing on law there's always about a quarter of the ameri can people who won't leave their president he said dean said this is particularly evident today with loyalty to president george w bush he said nixon's position was not threatened until his last days when congress was controlled by democrats given the fact that bush had a republican congress he said they weren't about to start an impeachment process dean said bush's stay in power has led to some mistakes in policy i've never before felt embarrassed by some of the things we're doing he said torture pre emptive invading how could we jam democracy down their throats when they may not want it the nixon regime was corrupted by intel lectual dishonesty dean said and he believes bush's terms have had similar problems two of dean's books conservatives without conscience and broken government touch on intellectual dishonesty in the white house according to dean the bush administration relied too heavily on the work of john yoo assis tant to the attorney general in advising bush from 2001 to 2003 we went to war based on his memos dean said i de-constructed a lot of john yoo's stuff to admissions to increase recruitment in the south â– school to hire two new admissions directors to recruit in the south to help increase geographic diversity by sarah freeman the admissions office hopes to bring more diversity to the class of 2013 by increasing recruitment in the south and southwestern u.s the changes will be implemented through the hiring of two new assistant directors of admissions by early sum mer as well as altering and expanding existing recruit ment practices j.leon washington dean of admissions and financial aid said the directors will each receive their own territory to recruit allowing admissions directors to reach more students across the country and around the world wash ington said in the next few years officials expect a drop in the number of students applying to college because there are less people in that age bracket in the u.s washington said this population shift will lead to more competition between selective schools and is one of the reasons lehigh decided to increase recruitment in other areas of the country we are not only going to continue to do well in our traditional territories but we are also going to make an investment into new territories to attract more students he said this is also in keeping with the university's de sire to become more diverse in a broad sense admissions was drawn to the south and southwest because data shows the population trend expected to de crease college applicants around the world might not be as drastic in these regions washington said washington also said it is important to recruit from the south because students from these states tradition ally stay in state for college but now this is no longer the case as more students take their college experience as a chance to get away a lot of my friends from home went to state schools but i chose a university on the east coast be cause i wanted to go to a new place with new people because that is what college is all about said kathryne walker 11 from louisville kentucky in order to attract students such as walker an in creased effort needs to be put into establishing a lehigh presence in the pockets of diversity washington said the 2008 census of lehigh students shows more than 75 percent of undergraduate students come from pennsylvania new jersey new york connecticut and massachusetts barrett frankel assistant director of admissions said the most important step when trying to increase diversity see attacks page 2 see dean page 5 see recruiting page 4 wheels on campus page 7 b women's lacrosse team beats navy page 16 spring fling slide show thebrownandwhite.com
