the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 39 friday march 21 2008 all the lehigh news first new dean named to the college of education by elizabeth murray gary m sasso chair of the department of teaching and learning at the university of lowa has been named le high's new dean of the college of education sasso was selected by a dean search committee of eight faculty and staff mem bers from all four colleges and one graduate student dean anne meltzer of the college of arts and sciences served as chair for the committee sasso is replacing gary lutz interim dean of the college of education who replaced the former dean sally white in may 2007 sally white left lehigh for the college of notre dame at maryland sasso is a specialist in the fields of behavioral disorders and disabilities he has been at the university of lowa since 1985 and has served as chair of the department of teaching and learning for the past six years meltzer said the commit tee looked at many qualified individuals sasso was chosen because of his depth of under standing k-12 education and human service scholarship the issues that are important to lehigh's education college he had pretty much all the the fifth year b&wphoto by chris knight students and faculty walked in a coffin march wednesday sponsored by the progressive student alliance to mark the fifth year of fighting in iraq 4,300 troops have died since the war began bill clinton speaks at hotel bethlehem by elaine hardenstine a packed hotel bethlehem shifted restlessly listening to gloria estefan's get on your feet while over 200 people stood outside in the pouring rain waiting for the arrival of former president bill clinton wednesday afternoon appearing an hour later than scheduled among cheers and clap ping clinton entered the main ballroom he spoke about the u.s econo my education and his wife sen hill ary clinton's chances of winning the presidency in november she is the one who will turn good intentions into real changes he said clinton jumped into his solu tions for america with a discussion on the worsening economy he said many people have been suffering from the effects of mortgage foreclosures rising debt and job losses if sen clinton is elected he said she will fix the problem before it gets worse we don't want the wheels to roll off he said he said more jobs will be avail able if the u.s becomes energy independent every town will need workers to build and maintain wind solar and clean coal energy most importantly clinton said those jobs will not be outsourced a man fixing this hotel can only do his job in bethlehem clinton said the government will also no longer have to pay subsidies to oil companies because the product will be unneeded sen clinton is also spoke wednesday in the main ballroom at the hotel bethlehem sammy closed for hazing charges pending appeal by elizabeth callahan sigma alpha mv fraternity was disbanded at a university hearing monday night after being charged with hazing during a rush event the fraternity has a week to appeal under the current sanction the chapter will be dissolved for the next four years after which the fraternity will be eligible to apply for reinstate ment said john smeaton vice provost for student affairs if the disciplinary appeals committee grants the appeal the fraternity will have anoth er hearing in the next several weeks smeaton said the news comes less than a week after the lehigh char ter of beta theta pi fraternity was disbanded by its national headquarters for incidents dur ing its pledging sammy was charged after a rush event feb 6 on that night students were invited up to a dinner at the sammy house were served alcohol and played drinking games said assistant dean of students chris mulvihill later the rushes were blindfolded and taken to a house off-campus where the members of the fraternity al legedly forced the rushes to drink alcohol after completing different tasks mulvihill said lehigh was made aware of the events after a freshman who had attended the event was arrested for underage drinking in his dormitory later officials beta can reinstate in 10 years by elaine hardenstine and matt brichta restrictions for beta theta pi fraternity's return to cam pus were discussed at a uni versity hearing monday beta can apply for rein statement in 10 years given its nationals approves the bid said john smeaton vice pro vost for student affairs lehigh will also need to be in an expansionary period smeaton said in order to take in another fraternity termination was a consid eration given the circumstanc es smeaton said the hearing resulted from incidents that occurred during a pledging event over a month ago at beta two freshmen were taken to the hospital after drink ing near-lethal amounts of alcohol at the hearing beta was charged with hazing endan gering the welfare of others encouraging others to violate university policies furnishing false information and distrib uting alcohol to minors smeaton said an appeal is possible smeaton said lehigh has been working to strengthen greek life since 2003 when certain standards of excel see beta
