the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 27 tuesday january 30 2007 all the lehigh news first new global study plans announced by joshua weaver news writer the college of arts and sciences will be of fering a new globalization initiative program and has appointed journalism professor jack lule according to a university press release lule is a national endowment for the hu manities award recipient and has taught an in ternational communications course since 1990 the topic of globalization will soon inherit a larger role at lehigh placing the university at the forefront of globalization studies this new initiative will enhance research and teaching on the international social politi cal economic environmental and cultural con cerns of today and tomorrow according to the press release the globalization and social change ini tiative will be an interdisciplinary academic program using courses in all of lehigh's four academic colleges to give students a broader and more thorough education on the topic of globalization said anne meltzer dean of the college of arts and sciences the topic of globalization is huge meltzer said it's transforming the world a global studies major will also be created comprised of courses from ten different aca demic departments it will include mandatory study abroad moderate language proficiency and sessions at the united nations meltzer said the reputation of an institution is built on its faculty and the research of its students meltzer said activists fight for broughal by caitlin kingsley news writer members of the friends of broughal school discussed their position for preserving and reusing broughal middle school at the south side task force public meeting last tuesday albert wurth associate professor of political science spoke about the ef fects of demolishing the building km carrell-smith professor of practice in history prepared a written statement arguing against demolition that was distributed at the meeting the city of bethlehem plans to de molish the school which is adjacent to lehigh and build a new one but some say demolition is not the answer they are fighting instead for the preservation and possible reuse of the building at the meeting community mem bers including lehigh professors and preservation experts discussed the his torical environmental and economic impacts of demolition broughal built in 1917 has been determined eligible for the national register of historic places the nation's list of historic resources that are worthy of preservation michel lefevre a planner for the preservation services for pennsylvania historical and museum commission and bureau for historic preservation said destroying the school would not convey the right message bethlehem is one of the finest b&wphoto by chris ferenzi cities in pennsylvania lefevre said but that didn't just happen overnight it happened because of the histori cal preservation approach of the city schools are supposed to teach civic values however the demolition of broughal does not show any apprecia tion for history or resources according to discussions at the meeting some basic environmental risks associated with demolition in clude asbestos lead dust and waste there's an environmental cost for taking usable material and turning it into a pile of rubble in a landfill wurth said the demolition would also cause a loss of usable space and affect the community members and professors fought against broughal middle school's planned demolition last tuesday students discuss attorney brett sokolow titled drunk sex or date rape can you tell the difference i came here tonight not to tell you what you should think about drinking or sex or the mixture of the two sokolow said but to create a forum for us all to discuss a difficult issue together sokolow a sexual assault and ha rassment attorney is also president of the national center for higher education risk management he has written 10 books on campus safety and has been presenting his interac tive discussion to colleges for 10 years sokolow then led the audience in an extensive question and answer session during which he revealed further details concerning an assault case that was discussed he refused to disclose his own position on the issue if i am anything other than neu tral it takes away from the audience's independent decision making so kolow said this is a considerably hard task because i have such strong feelings about this particular case the sexual assault case he de scribed one he was personally in volved with depicted two college students who were renamed todd and amy to maintain confidentiality in sokolow's description of the story amy and todd met for the first time on the evening of the incident amy drank the equivalent of ap proximately 20 drinks including powerful jell-o shots todd served her but did not drink himself todd stopped drinking at 1 a.m but amy continued to drink more amy proceeded to vomit and asked todd to walk her home todd decided to stay and things contin ued to escalate even after she got sick for the second time at 4 a.m attorney brett sokolow
