the brown and white vol 114 no 23 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday december 5 2006 all the lehigh news first law 101 course reintroduced by clark lampen â– legal studies task force brings back law 101 but professor perry zirkel will not be teaching the course assistant news editor law 101 an introduction to law will be offered again next semester after being suspended indefi nitely in spring 2004 the legal studies task force decided to reinstitute the course after an overwhelming outcry from students and alumni about the importance and quality of the course according to tom hyclak interim dean of the college of business and economics the course however will not be taught by profes sor perry zirkel who had taught law 101 for more than a decade and was highly praised by his stu dents hyclak said zirkel will not be teaching the course because of his engagements within the college of education zirkel is a teacher in the college but zirkel said he does have the time and re sources to devote to teaching law 101 and would like to teach it zirkel said he thinks his not being selected is the result of more than just a necessity to keep him free to teach education courses peter maher 05 a former student and teaching assistant for zirkel's class said he thinks zirkel's not being selected is unfortunate professor zirkel's class was challenging in that he has very high standards and expects his students to earn their grades maher said zirkel was the recipient of the panhellenic out standing faculty award in 2005 nominated and se lected by the undergraduate body hyclak said he has not yet discussed his assign ments in the college of education and any prospects to return to teaching law 101 with zirkel but he gast to hold office hours by allison bees news writer in response to requests made at the movement's open forum held on nov 14 president alice gast will be holding office hours starting in december gast said she hopes to foster a sense of communi cation and understanding between students and the administration she said it will give her an opportunity to listen to what different students and organi zations have to say as i meet with students gast said many of them tell me that they have thoughts about life at lehigh that they would like to share with me i would like to continue that di alog and so i offered to meet with students and small groups during open office hours gast said she has a de manding schedule although it may take several weeks to schedule an appointment she said she will try to fit in as many appointments as she can the meetings will range anywhere from 20 minutes b&wphoto by james grebbler to an hour depending on the size of the group and the subject i hope that students will feel comfortable sharing their ideas about ways to create a great learning and living environment that we are all proud of she said i hope to learn more about lehigh from the student perspective and to improve communica tion between students and administrators one member of the move ment devin dobson 07 said he thinks gast offering office students addressed president gast left at the movement's open forum gast responded to requests for a more open administration by instituting new office hours income taxes are not lawful new film says by chris knight b controversial film to play in packard auditorium thursday experts debate content assistant editorial pages editor every year working students must file and pay the taxes with form 1040 the personal fed eral income tax returns if they don't file they could be fined have assets seized or go to jail but one filmmaker aaron russo said people don't have to pay federal income taxes for one simple reason - no law re quires them to do so russo's documentary america freedom to fas cism has been brought to lehigh by wlvr and kappa alpha psi the screening will be free of charge and open to the public at 8 p.m in packard laboratory on thursday russo said he began film ing the documentary when he couldn't find the law requiring americans to pay a personal income tax his journey eventually took him into the patriot act fraudu lent voting machines a cor rupt internal revenue service abuse of police powers im planted identification chips and his belief america is becoming a fascist police state i started investigating it and said well is there a law rus so said i couldn't find any law and i called the irs to show me the law and they couldn't give me a law russo was most surprised at all the supreme court deci sions he said annulled the 16th amendment the amendment which allows the government to tax personal wages russo said the main focus of his documentary was education i think the idea of the mov ie is to educate and enlighten people how the government really works he said wlvr station manager aj fritz who helped bring the film to lehigh said he first learned of the film through russo's pro motional team which had been trying to get the film shown in colleges to educate students he said russo had tried to get the film shown commercial ly but was having trouble with distribution fritz said he talked it over with wlvr board member shaun redwood 07 and decided they wanted the film shown we talked about this fritz said and thought this would be good to bring to the student body although fritz said he had not personally seen the film he thought russo was trying to expose a corrupt system and see law page 4 see gast page 4 see film page 5 quality of applicants on the rise at lehigh page 7 wrestling team downs \ drexel page 20 check the web site for online exclusives bw.lehigh.edu
