accord ing to frederick morhart chairman of the dance committee this change was made as the re sult of two outstanding factors one reason is that the modern youth has formed a complex of never ar riving at functions of this nature earlier than 10 o'clock because din ners and dressing take up most of the earlier part of the evening on the other hand popular accord around the campus has evidenced the desire to have the later hour be cause of the above reasons as the senior ball is entirely an affair by the students and for their enjoyment the wishes of the under graduates met the approval of the committee who immediately com plied with the expressed desire as evidenced about the campus the tax has been set at 5 a cou ple and 3 stag and will be sold friday nov 14 the night of rotary club at the ho tel bethlehem wednesday noon traced the history of the lehigh university library from its first be ginnings in 1887 down to the pres ent time he told of the provision made by judge packer the founder of the university for the library how he built at a cost of 100,000 a fine li brary building in memory of his daughter lucy packer linderman this library serves the university for fifty years longer than the av erage library building serves judge packer in his will also made a provision for the purchase of books and the upkeep of the library so that during the first ten years of the library's life some 60,000 books were added to its shelves so well were books selected by the first director of the library prof william chandler that many of them now form a great treasure collection of rare books in the new library the growth of the collec tion by 1925 had reached such pro portions that the library building was no longer adequate to house them nor was it large enough in seating capacity for the increased student body it was very evident that either a new building or an extensive addition was needed but it was decided to add to the exist ing building since the old lucy packer linderman library occu pied a spot in the very heart of the campus describes new library mr leach then took up and de scribed the new university library the old lucy packer linderman building the new structure has five time the floor space of the old and there is adequate room for all li brary functions there is now a cat alogueing room where new ship ments of books are received and catalogued immediately this cat alogueing of new books and recat alogueing of old books requires the constant service of two cataloguers and one typist the librarian's office is all of what one should be says mr leach in addition to the main reading room there are about eleven sem inar rooms and numerous other rooms for individual use certain rooms are maintained for the dis building were used thursday for the first time this year to screen the ore which was crushed earlier in the year by the jar roll and gyrotory crushers the work on the machines proved to 100 mesh the difference in the machines ro-tap screen being run by the shifting of the screens and the dorr bowl by the use of water pressure added to the students difficulties it was stated that the work done by the students would be in the form of a test the following ordinance taken from the pennsylvania motor ve hicle code might be of interest to lehigh students according to ser geant w h mclarin of the state highway patrol substation in beth lehem the ordinance taken from article x section 1023 substation b of the vehicle code reads no person shall hang on to or ride on the outside or the rear end of any vehicle and no person on a bicycle roller skates or any similar devices shall hold fast to or hitch to any moving vehicle the penalty for a violation of this ruling is ten days in jail or 25 fine it has been observed that many of the students driving cars in the city and surrounding country allow other persons to ride with them in the above mentioned man ner this is a dangerous practice as the driver is subject to the same penalty as the state highway patrol will have men stationed on the william perm highway during the lehigh lafayette game students are warn ed to desist from such practice at that time and all other times burr publishes greek number an exhibition of modern austrian paintings was opened yesterday at the university art gallery in the li brary and will continue until nov 24 from 2 to 5 p m daily this exhibition under the aus pices of the college aft association includes more than 50 paintings by artists of the two modern austrian schools the hagebund and the the efforts of garth a howland assistant professor of nine arts the first showing of the paintings at the silberman galleries in new york was opened by edgar pro chnick austrian minister to the united states who is patron for the exhibition second issue continues new policy of localizing humor the browsing room was de signed to furnish the students with a room to be used solely for leis usely and profitable reading but un til there is enough money to retain an attendant and to stock the shelves with good books it will re main closed this was the press statement issued by president charles r richards yesterday the room is exceedingly well furnished and equipped and is an ideal place for the student to be come acquainted with the classics and recognized contemporary lit erature it is not however a smok ing room in which to lounge dur ing unfilled hours not yet it is a room for study drown hall is the recreation center and may be used by men desiring to waste away their time the library is adapted to study with these two accommoda tions there is little necessity for the browsing room to be used oth er than as a reading room with an attendant in charge its mainten ance as such will be insured and the men will have the advantage of a luxury which should be of great advantage to them he said coke lab completed with the completion of the work on the guard screen protecting some of the mining machinery and switch board the improvements in the eckley b coxe mining engin eering laboratory will be finished the tables in the fuel technology department were set up by wed nesday and the pipes to the tables installed a new desk was placed in prof howard eckfelt's office concrete work on the new settling pits is finished and the old pits have been covered with concrete paint ing inside the building is nearly finished study is going on in spite of the confusion of incomplete im provements however coming events at times i wish i were back up on the hill again concluded fred trafford now known as head of the local police department but re membered by many as former head of the lehigh union it's a thankless job trying to run a police department there aren't any working hours for_a po lice superintendent because he's on the job all the time we have all kinds of problems to solve ranging from who stole the goal posts to determining percentage of intox icated lehigh students how do you get your principal information regarding the making of intoxicated beverages inquired the reporter seeking a means of be ginning the interview we have numerous methods of finding that out one of the best ways i know of is to watch sugar shipments irom large warehouses we know that when a shipment of sugar goes to a paint shop that there is something wrong some where even after the receipt of these tips we must be careful for instance the other day we raided a place where we knew liquor was to be manufactured when we got there we found the malt and ev erything ready in large vats but the actual process of fermentation hadn't yet started so we couldn't press and charges against the own ers or proprietors of the still i understand you have received numerous threatening letters from some of your enemies the reporter continued yes i have smiled fred as though he enjoyed the question i trafford yearns for old position says new police job is tough have just rounded out eleven months as head of the department and so far i have more than 500 letters threatening my life i have never tried to trace any of these missiles back to their source but during the first few months i had a bodyguard with me constantly as a protection against the carrying out of these threats most of them start out with the words we're going to get you followed by sev eral lines of the vilest profanity ob tainable i might be worth a lot of mon ey if i had accepted all the bribes which have been offered me the first thing offered me was a pack ard sedan several days later i was offered five dollars per week for every slot machine in the city if i would permit them to remain bawdy houses offered me huge sums if they could escape my pad lock orders a copy of the burr caught the reporter's eye fred smiled as he leafed through the latest edition of lehigh's comic you know i've sort of been taken for a ride in this issue but wait he laughs best who laughs last the reporter was truly puzzled but was soon enlight ened when fred continued by sat ing that two pages of the february issue of the burr was to be given to him to get back at his assailants in the present issue at that point a nearby clock struck seven times and the busy reverend mr trafford left to at tend the evening session of police court friday 7:30 p m meeting of the robert w blake society room 303 packard laboratory 7:30 p m meeting of the lehigh student branch a i e e and lecture on applying an engin eering education by h g har vey of the associated gas and electric company saturday 2:30 p m frosh football vs per kiomen taylor stadium 2:30 p m varsity cross country vs rutgers sunday 3 p m college sing sponsored by the lehigh union in drown hall although subject to verification with repeated experiments to be done later dr laird says there are definite indications that sleep ing with the noise and vibrations produces the following effects more headaches more circles un der the eyes more unsteadiness on the feet more noises and buzzing heard in the head during the day more irritation caused by ordinary things time drags more laughing at common occurences desire to be alone no desire to talkj and more effort need to start to do routine work the belief that one can-get used to noise also is upset by the re sults of the experiment the effects of the second week being more se vere and covering more peculari ties of behavior than for the first week our previous experiments have dealt with noise alone without vi bration and have shown that noise will raise blood pressure without awakening the sleeper students sleep on vibrating beds discover new evils of machine age nine colgate university men are sleeping nightly on vibrating beds and discovering unexpected ways in which a machine age may cause headaches circled eyes and unso ciable dispositions these new rumble experiments combine noise and vibrations in a way to imitate some of the more acute sleeping obstacles of modern life they are conducted in the psy chological laboratory under direc tion of dr donald a laird and with the assistance of herman h wille and clifford h shipley the vibration is announced as less than on a railroad train and about equal to that experienced in a high-grade automobile it is pro duced by hanging electric motors under the beds each motor is of one-sixth horsepower attached to the tops of the springs but swing ing along with accessory apparatus below the bed the noise is a hum slightly faint er than conversational loudness noise and vibration are steady all night featuring a full page of carica tures of the faculty by carl gieger ich the greek's number of the burr appeared saturday continuing its policy of localizing the humor burro paid particular at tention to the various fraternities no house was spared the scathing fire of the editorial board in burro's ear and at the theatre were two feature pages that were presented for the first time in the former the nosey re porter took the faculty for a ride while the reviews in the latter re sembled those in life and the various metropolitan newspapers there was little art work and the composition of the burr seemed to suffer as a result the campus caustics page lived up to its reputation and was un doubtedly the choicest morsel in the whole issue the next issue will be the pur itan number and will be out on nov 25 brown and white friday november 7 1930 bethlehem pa to lecture here brown and white plans competition vergil anniversary is one year early vol xxxviii no accord ing to frederick morhart chairman of the dance committee this change was made as the re sult of two outstanding factors one reason is that the modern youth has formed a complex of never ar riving at functions of this nature earlier than 10 o'clock because din ners and dressing take up most of the earlier part of the evening on the other hand popular accord around the campus has evidenced the desire to have the later hour be cause of the above reasons as the senior ball is entirely an affair by the students and for their enjoyment the wishes of the under graduates met the approval of the committee who immediately com plied with the expressed desire as evidenced about the campus the tax has been set at 5 a cou ple and 3 stag and will be sold friday nov 14 the night of rotary club at the ho tel bethlehem wednesday noon traced the history of the lehigh university library from its first be ginnings in 1887 down to the pres ent time he told of the provision made by judge packer the founder of the university for the library how he built at a cost of 100,000 a fine li brary building in memory of his daughter lucy packer linderman this library serves the university for fifty years longer than the av erage library building serves judge packer in his will also made a provision for the purchase of books and the upkeep of the library so that during the first ten years of the library's life some 60,000 books were added to its shelves so well were books selected by the first director of the library prof william chandler that many of them now form a great treasure collection of rare books in the new library the growth of the collec tion by 1925 had reached such pro portions that the library building was no longer adequate to house them nor was it large enough in seating capacity for the increased student body it was very evident that either a new building or an extensive addition was needed but it was decided to add to the exist ing building since the old lucy packer linderman library occu pied a spot in the very heart of the campus describes new library mr leach then took up and de scribed the new university library the old lucy packer linderman building the new structure has five time the floor space of the old and there is adequate room for all li brary functions there is now a cat alogueing room where new ship ments of books are received and catalogued immediately this cat alogueing of new books and recat alogueing of old books requires the constant service of two cataloguers and one typist the librarian's office is all of what one should be says mr leach in addition to the main reading room there are about eleven sem inar rooms and numerous other rooms for individual use certain rooms are maintained for the dis state highway patrol substation in beth lehem the ordinance taken from article x section 1023 substation b of the vehicle code reads no person shall hang on to or ride on the outside or the rear end of any vehicle and no person on a bicycle roller skates or any similar devices shall hold fast to or hitch to any moving vehicle the penalty for a violation of this ruling is ten days in jail or 25 fine it has been observed that many of the students driving cars in the city and surrounding country allow other persons to ride with them in the above mentioned man ner this is a dangerous practice as the driver is subject to the same penalty as the state highway patrol will have men stationed on the william perm highway during the lehigh lafayette game students are warn ed to desist from such practice at that time and all other times burr publishes greek number an exhibition of modern austrian paintings was opened yesterday at the university art gallery in the li brary and will continue richards yesterday the room is exceedingly well furnished and equipped and is an ideal place for the student to be come acquainted with the classics and recognized contemporary lit erature it is not however a smok ing room in which to lounge dur ing unfilled hours not yet it is a room for study drown hall is the recreation center and may be used by men desiring to waste away their time the library is adapted to study with these two accommoda tions there is little necessity for the browsing room to be used oth er than as a reading room with an attendant in charge its mainten ance as such will be insured and the men will have the advantage of a luxury which should be of great advantage to them he said coke lab completed with the completion of the work on the guard screen protecting paint ing inside the building is nearly finished study is going on in spite of the confusion of incomplete im provements however coming events at times i wish i were back up on the hill again concluded fred trafford now known as head of the local police department but re membered by many as former head of the lehigh union it's a thankless job trying to run a police department there aren't any working hours for_a po lice superintendent because he's on the job all the time we have all kinds of problems to solve ranging from who stole the goal posts to determining percentage of intox icated lehigh students how do you get your principal information regarding the making of intoxicated beverages inquired the reporter seeking a means of be ginning the interview we have numerous methods of finding that out one of the best ways i know of is to watch sugar shipments irom large warehouses we know that when a shipment of sugar goes to a paint shop that there is something wrong some where even after the receipt of these tips we must be careful for instance the other day we raided a place where we knew liquor was to be manufactured when we got there we found the malt and ev erything ready in large vats but the actual process of fermentation hadn't yet started so we couldn't press and charges against the own ers or proprietors of the still i understand you have received numerous threatening letters from some of your enemies the reporter continued yes i have smiled fred as though he enjoyed the question i trafford yearns for old position says new police job is tough have just rounded out eleven months as head of the department and so far i have more than 500 letters threatening my life i have never tried to trace any of these missiles back to their source but during the first few months i had a bodyguard with me constantly as a protection against the carrying out of these threats most of them start out with the words we're going to get you followed by sev eral lines of the vilest profanity ob tainable i might be worth a lot of mon ey if i had accepted all the bribes which have been offered me the first thing offered me was a pack ard sedan several days later i was offered five dollars per week for every slot machine in the city if i would permit them to remain bawdy houses offered me huge sums if they could escape my pad lock orders a copy of the burr caught the reporter's eye fred smiled as he leafed through the latest edition of lehigh's comic you know i've sort of been taken for a ride in this issue but wait he laughs best who laughs last the reporter was truly puzzled but was soon enlight ened when fred continued by sat ing that two pages of the february issue of the burr was to be given to him to get back at his assailants in the present issue at that point a nearby clock struck seven times and the busy reverend mr trafford left to at tend the evening session of police court friday 7:30 p m meeting of the robert w blake society room 303 packard laboratory 7:30 p m meeting of the lehigh student branch a i e e and lecture on applying an engin eering education by h g har vey of the associated gas and electric company verification with repeated experiments to be done later dr laird says there are definite indications that sleep ing with the noise and vibrations produces the following effects more headaches more circles un der the eyes more unsteadiness on the feet more noises and buzzing heard in the head during the day more irritation caused by ordinary things time drags more laughing at common occurences desire to be alone no desire to talkj and more effort need to start to do routine work the belief that one can-get used to noise also is upset by the re sults of the experiment the effects of the second week being more se vere and covering more peculari ties of behavior than for the first week our previous experiments have dealt with noise alone without vi bration and have shown that noise will raise blood pressure without awakening the sleeper students sleep on vibrating beds discover new evils of machine age nine colgate university men are sleeping nightly on vibrating beds and discovering unexpected ways in which a machine age may cause headaches circled eyes and unso ciable dispositions these new rumble experiments combine noise and vibrations in a way to imitate some of the more acute sleeping obstacles of modern life they are conducted in the psy chological laboratory under direc tion of dr donald a laird and with the assistance of herman h wille and clifford h shipley the vibration is announced as less than on a railroad train and about equal to that experienced in a high-grade automobile it is pro duced by hanging electric motors under the beds each motor is of one-sixth horsepower attached to the tops of the springs but swing ing along with accessory apparatus below the bed the noise is a hum slightly faint er than conversational loudness noise and vibration are steady all night featuring a full page of carica tures of the faculty by carl gieger ich the greek's number of the burr appeared saturday continuing its policy of localizing the humor burro paid particular at tention to the various fraternities no house was spared the scathing fire of the editorial board in burro's ear and at the theatre were two feature pages that were presented for the first time in the former the nosey re porter took the faculty for a ride while the reviews in the latter re sembled those in life and the various metropolitan newspapers there was little art work and the composition of the burr seemed to suffer as a result the campus caustics page lived up to its reputation and was un doubtedly the choicest morsel in the whole issue the next issue will be
