the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 2 friday september 8 2006 all the lehigh news first code passed despite objections by leigh gilsenan â– faculty vote enacts code of conduct despite student senate's objection to lack of fifth amendment right for students senior news writer last may faculty members failed to adopt a revi sion to the code of conduct that would have given students the right to avoid self-incrimination during a code of conduct trial last spring the senate petitioned to have a clause revised that did not give students the right to avoid self incrimination while testifying against another student under the new code of conduct a student brought in as a witness in a conduct case against an other student must answer all questions asked even if that means self-incrimination students who are accused of violations of the code of conduct do not have to answer all questions concerning the violation members of the senate felt making witnesses an swer all questions was an ethical violation of the u.s constitution even though the university is under no obligation to follow its tenets because it is private according to assistant dean of students chris mulvihill the u.s constitution while very impor tant to our federal government is not applicable to lehigh after the year-long review and a faculty vote the code was passed and the senate's recommendation was not added mulvihill said that the careful review of the code included all members of the lehigh community the code was drafted and reviewed by faculty students staff and legal counsel and the code was approved by the faculty and the board of trustees mulvihill said it is my belief that this careful review prior to the adoption and the on-going review of the code of conduct does serve the best interests of le high university kip wallen 06 last year's senate president at tended the faculty meeting where a vote on the code was taken wallen spoke on behalf of the senate to try and persuade the faculty to vote against the code until the revisions were made according to current senate president cara diorio 07 we felt that we weren't fairly represented at the faculty meeting on the code of conduct diorio said there isn't a faculty senate so those who voted on the code were just whoever was in attendance it wasn't a fair opportunity for us to present our revisions mulvihill disagreed with this argument and said he felt the senate was given a fair opportunity he does not think the revision was rejected because of a lack of knowledge on behalf of the faculty the issue was covered at length in several issues of the brown and white and was discussed in detail at the may 2 meeting with representatives of the the movement's mission gains trustees support by leah nash news writer both the academic affairs committee and the board of trustees passed a motion this summer to fully support the movement a student orga nization pushing for campus diversity according to the the movement's web sites its mission is to promote diver sity acceptance and under standing within the lehigh community with a goal to create an environment where all students faculty and staff can feel welcome to express their individuality in a safe community atmosphere b&wphoto by lindsaykeller the board of trustees passed the motion during its meeting on june 2 board of trustees member ralph thomas who has been present at several of the movement's large events pro posed the statement to the rest of the board devin dobson devin dobson 07 chair of the movement's administration committee answers questions at the meeting tuesday potential future plans for the club include student tours of the south side students click with in-class technology by ryan ruggiero news writer new clicker technology de signed to help students learn in large introductory classes is in its pilot run this semester said greg reihman director of faculty developments clicker technology which consists of a device about the size of a id card operating over radio frequencies works in conjunction with the professor's projector powerpoint slides and classroom computer the clickers allow professors to take surveys and obtain student opinions on and comprehension of material polls can be taken either anonymously or not the format of the clicker polls is multiple-choice because infor mation is transmitted by radio signals it can be sorted organized and displayed almost immedi ately faculty can then determine whether to review material or to keep moving forward based on the results of questions reihman said a problem in large lecture classes is the dif ficulty to know all of the students on a personal level we always look for ways to engage students and help them do better reihman said reihman said he hopes click ers will not only assist students in the pace of the course but also make the course more interactive for students clicker technology began when innovations in teach ing i^arge lecture introductory courses met to discuss ways of improving effective teaching and learning in classes of 100 students or more reihman said faculty at other universities including a professoi of physics at harvard university have used the clicker system and found it to be very helpful several other faculty members were aware of the potential bene fits of the clicker system and after the itallic met last spring they decided it would be a good idea to have a pilot run this fall courses participating in the test run of the clicker technology are introductory classes in physics chemistry and psychology the effect clickers have this semester will determine the fur ther use of clickers in other large introductory classes in the future students
